What is Cameo?

Cameo by Vimeo is a free iOS app that makes it easy to import clips from your Camera Roll, edit them together, and apply professional-grade video effects and styles — all on your phone. Once your mobile masterpiece is complete, you can upload it directly to Vimeo, or blast it out to your social channels.

How do I make videos using Cameo?

Intro
Once you’ve downloaded the free Cameo app from the App Store, log in to your Vimeo account, or create a new Vimeo account if you don’t already have one. Once you’re logged in, tap “Create New Video.” (When prompted, be sure to give Cameo access to your Camera Roll.)

Importing videos into project
Select the red “+” button to begin a new project. Tap and highlight as many clips in your Camera Roll as you’d like. Once you’ve chosen the clips you want to add, tap “Import” on the top right corner of the screen. Once the clips have successfully been imported, they will automatically begin to play in your timeline. If you’re in the middle of your project and realize you’d like to add another clip, never fear! Use the Clip Edit view (scissor icon) and select the red “+” button to import more footage. These clips will be added to the end of your timeline, but you can always move them around (see below).

Trimming clips
To trim down your clips, click the edit tool (scissor icon) and adjust the two white dots at bottom of the screen to select both a start and end point.

Changing the order of clips
To reorder your clips, tap and hold your finger anywhere on the clip you’d like to move. A timeline will appear and allow you to reorder the selected clip. Now simply drag and drop!

Deleting and duplicating clips
Tap and hold your finger anywhere on the clip. Now you’ll have the option to either “Delete” or “Duplicate” the clip by dragging it up or down, respectively.

Add or change the theme
To add a theme, select the icon that looks like three overlapping circles and then tap the “Theme” button.

Swipe through options to find a look that works for you, then tap again to select it. Once you’ve made your choice, you can use the slider to adjust the intensity of the filter. In this window, you’re also able to select the font and color for any text you add to your Cameo video. Tap on the “Font” button repeatedly to toggle between the different options (you’ll get three choices per theme). You can also cycle through font color options with the “A” button. Once you’ve selected your theme and font, click the check mark in the top right corner of your screen. To make changes to your theme or font, simply tap the filter icon again.

Add, change, or remove music
To add music, select the music icon in the toolbox. This will bring you to the Cameo music library.

Swipe across and up/down to browse through tracks, and tap “Categories” to discover music by genre. To preview a song, tap on the album cover and a small playbar will appear. Get more information about the track (track length, artist bio, etc.) by clicking the “i” information button.

Once you’ve found your perfect tune, tap select! If you change your mind and want to remove the track, go back to the Music menu and tap the album cover on the upper right corner of the screen. Then tap “Unselect.”

Adjusting audio levels for your clips
To adjust the audio levels for a particular clip, tap the edit tool (pad and pencil) and then navigate to the clip you would like to adjust. Tap the audio icon repeatedly to navigate through “Audio On,” “Audio Off,” and “Audio Boost.”

This will only affect the single clip you’re currently on, so if you’d like to adjust the levels for every clip in your sequence, be sure to go through and adjust each manually.

Adding captions
To add captions to your clips, tap the edit tool (pad and pencil),then select the Captions “A|” button — just keep ‘em under 40 characters! You can then choose where you want your caption placed on your clip by using the “bottom,” “center,” or “top” icons on the upper part of your screen.

The text’s font and color are determined by the choices you made in the previous “Choose a theme” window. When you’re finished, select the red check mark on the top-right corner of the screen.

Finishing up!
Once you’ve finished editing your clips and applying themes and music, tap the red check mark in the top-right corner of the screen.

Add a title and thumbnail
When you’ve completed your edit, it’s time to choose a thumbnail and add a title to your Cameo creation. From the “Upload to Vimeo” page, tap “Add a Title,” and slap a name on that beautiful video baby of yours. Once your title is in place, you will be prompted to select a thumbnail photo by skimming through your masterpiece using the scrubber bar on the bottom of the screen.

When you’ve landed on the still you want to use for your thumbnail, simply tap the red check mark in the top right.

Add a description
After completing your thumbnail, you’ll be brought back to the “Upload to Vimeo” page. Tap “Add a description” in the lower left-hand side of the screen to add some more info to your video.

That’s a wrap! Your Cameo video will automatically be set to upload as “Private” to vimeo.com unless you specify otherwise. You can toggle between Private and Public by tapping the privacy button in the lower right. (Keep in mind, once your Cameo video is uploaded to vimeo.com, you can further specify your privacy options within the video’s settings.) Once you tap “Done,” your video will automagically upload to your Vimeo account.

What happens if my Cameo video is longer than the soundtrack I selected?

Uh oh! That’s quite the pickle. The soundtrack is automatically set to loop and begin again once it finishes, but for best results, we suggest keeping your videos under the length of the song.

Can I make changes to a Cameo video I've already made?

Here you can choose to save the Cameo to your Camera Roll, update the description, edit the existing project, or delete it. Select the “Edit as a new project” button. A new project will be created on your homepage. Tap that, then get to work!

Caveat: You can import clips only from your phone’s Camera Roll, so keep in mind that any clips you have deleted from your Camera Roll after publishing will no longer be available for a new edit.

How do I get the new version of Cameo?

The new version of Cameo is not merely an update to the existing Cameo app. It’s a whole new (and wholly awesome) thing! So, you’ll need to visit the Apple App Store and download the new version to start creating videos using our cooler, way more powerful editing tools.

What about the old version of Cameo?
After September 1, you will no longer be able to use the old version of Cameo. However, you will still have access to the videos from the old app through cameo.tv/manage.

Can I add my own music to my Cameo projects?

The ability to upload songs from your library is currently not available. The Cameo team curates a diverse selection of pre-licensed music which can be used on any videos you create. Our music library includes over 100 songs, and we’re adding to that list weekly.
