Change Chrome languages & translate webpages
You can change the language Chrome uses and have Chrome translate webpages for you.
Translate webpages in Chrome
Whenever you come across a page written in a language you don't understand, you can use Chrome to translate the page:
- Use Chrome to open the webpage.
- Translate the page:
- Computer: Click Translate at the top of the page.
- Mobile device: Touch Translate at the bottom of the page.
- Chrome will translate the webpage this one time.
Not working? You can try refreshing the webpage. If you can't click Translate, the language might not be available for translation. Learn and set which languages to have translated in Chrome.
Change Chrome language translation settings
You can control whether the translate option shows up for certain sites and languages in two places: the translation box and Chrome settings.
- Open a page that’s written in another language.
- Translate the page:
- Computer: Click Options in the box that appears.
- Mobile device: Click Nope at the bottom of the page.
- Choose your language preferences:
- Select Never translate [language] if you don't want to see the translate option for the language you're viewing.
- Select Never translate this site if you don't want to see the translate option just for the site you're visiting.
- Select Always translate to automatically translate pages written in that language.
Computer:
- Open Chrome on your computer.
- In the top right corner, click the Menu

- Click Settings > Show advanced settings.
- In the "Languages" section, check or uncheck the box next to Offer to translate pages that aren't in a language you read.
- Optional: To change which languages you want translated, click Language and input settings.
.Android phone or tablet:
- Open the Chrome app

- Tap the Menu
.
- Tap Settings > Site settings > Language.
- Check or uncheck "Google Translate" to turn page translation on or off.
- When done, touch Back

iPhone or iPad:
- Open the Chrome app
- Tap the Menu
- Tap Settings > Content Settings > Google Translate.
- Tap the slider to turn page translation on or off,
- Tap Done.
Change Chrome browser language settings
The browser interface language is used for browser menus and prompts. It's based on the language you selected when you first downloaded Google Chrome, or from your phone or tablet's language. To change this setting on your computer:
- Open Chrome on your computer.
- In the top right corner, click the Menu
- Click Settings > Show advanced settings.
- In the "Languages" section, click Language and input settings.
- Select the language you'd like to use from the list. If the language isn't listed, first add it as one of your preferred webpage languages by clicking Add.
- On the right panel, click Display Google Chrome in this language.
- Fully close and reopen the browser to apply the changes.
Only add the languages you need, because malicious websites can use similar-looking characters from different languages to mislead you about the web address you're visiting.
If you need to type in language your computer doesn't support, the Google Input Tools Chrome extension might be helpful.
If you're using Windows, you might need to configure your Windows language settings to add East Asian languages or languages that use complex scripts.
