The South East England Portal
South East England is one of the nine official regions of England. It was created in 1994 and was adopted for statistics in 1999. Its boundaries include Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Oxfordshire, Surrey and West Sussex.
Its population as of the 2001 census was 8,000,550; the most populous region. The highest point is Walbury Hill in Berkshire at 297m/974 ft. In common usage the area referred to by South East may vary.
Until 1999 there was a South East Standard Statistical Region which also included the counties of Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Greater London. The former South East Civil Defence Region covered the same area as the current government office region.

The University of Oxford, located in the city of Oxford, England, is the oldest university in the English-speaking world.
The university traces its roots back to at least the end of the 11th century, although the exact date of foundation remains unclear. This dating would make its duration now equal to 900 years, like Plato's Academy (400s BC to AD 500s). According to legend, after riots between students and townsfolk broke out in 1209, some of the academics at Oxford fled north-east to the town of Cambridge, where the University of Cambridge was founded. The two instituations (collectively known as "Oxbridge") are the most selective universities in the UK.
The list of distinguished scholars at the University of Oxford is long and includes many who have made major contributions to British politics, the sciences, and literature. Since its founding in 1823, the Oxford Union, a private club devoted to formal debating and other social activities, has numbered among its members many of Britain's most noted political leaders.

Michael James Wallace Ashley (born 1963 in Burnham, Buckinghamshire) is an English billionaire retail entrepreneur, in the sporting goods market. He is also the owner of Newcastle United after paying around £135 million to buy the club.
Ranked 54th in the 2008 version of the Sunday Times Rich List with estimated wealth of £1.4 billion, Ashley was seen as an intensely private person, who never attended industry functions or gives interviews. Philip Beresforde, who compiles the annual Sunday Times list, said neither he nor his staff have ever managed to contact Ashley, and describes him as "easily Britain's answer to the late Howard Hughes." However, since Sports Direct International Plc went public, and his purchase of Newcastle United where he has taken to sitting in the stands with fans, Ashley has taken on a more public and accessible persona.
