May 2, 2013
Adding the WebGL access to the Google Maps API would be much appreciated!
Jun 13, 2013
As cool as this would be I think this should be part of v4 (not announced or confirmed and I am making this up) which I assume will utilize the technology of the new google maps preview which is much nicer than the current MapsGL implementation. I know no mobile browser yet support WebGL but I'd almost want this to wait until they do as this will be much more beneficial for mobile apps where currently zooming and map interactions are not very smooth.

I want this too :)

Rather than the entire WebGL at this time, could we please have at least the mouse wheel zoom with its elegant transition algorithm, and the slick/slide of region/city names?
May 26, 2014
@#45 They cannot include only some functionality. The transition and dynamic city names etc is al rendered with WebGL. So they have to do it all at once. I must say the team is doing great. When it was first introduced there were too many problems with performance , these are almost gone :)

Heavily anticipated feature. I'm currently developing a maps centric website which would highly benefit from MapsGL support.
Jun 26, 2014
Please brings this rendering capability to the V3 API! :) Polyline and GeoJSON feature rendering could greatly benefit from this as well!

This is all the more important now that Chrome is retiring NPAPI, meaning that applications built on the Google Earth plugin are going to stop working in Chrome. There is currently no practical alternative to the Earth plugin, and WebGL Maps seems like the most likely long-term replacement.

I am a developer of 3D Driving Simulator on Google Earth (http://framesynthesis.com/drivingsimulator/earth/). If you expose the WebGL Maps API, I'll try integrating it instantly, probably within 2-3 days :)

I am really hoping this will be a forthcoming feature of the Maps API. My non-profit organization does high latitude Polar research work at both Poles and the loss of the GE Plugin will be crippling for us. I would love it if I didn't have to migrate all of our mapping applications to Cesium, if Google will be adding this to the Maps API.

It's been nigh on three years since this issue was opened. It would be nice if somebody from Google could comment on the progress, or lack thereof.

are there really no plans for a Google Maps API WebGL version anytime soon? I heard it was related to not enough browsers performing well with webgl but that doesn't explain its widespread use on maps.google.com? it also hasn't stopped Mapbox from releasing a really nice webgl api either. this just seems like a really odd omission by Google, especially given how long maps.google.com has already supported it
