Yesterday, John Cho dropped the bombshell that his Hikaru Sulu would be gay in Star Trek Beyond. While the actor said the film would “not make a big thing” out of the reveal, it was a big deal for plenty of fans. Star Trek has been famously progressive since its earliest days, and yet the franchise has had no prominent gay characters to date. A gay Sulu seemed like an exciting step forward.
But one who wasn’t so thrilled about the news? George Takei himself. The original Sulu actor says that while he’s “delighted that there’s a gay character,” he feels it’s “really unfortunate” it had to be Sulu. Meanwhile, Star Trek Beyond writer and star Simon Pegg, who helped make the decision in the first place, says he “respectfully disagree[s]” with Takei’s stance. Read More »

Nicolas Winding Refn‘s The Neon Demon is a beautifully shot yet polarizing film. It’s either shallow, pretentious, sensationalistic and self-indulgent or a bold haunting hypnotic work of suspense. I’m still not sure if I liked it or not, but It has certainly remained with me since my viewing of the film over the weekend. My reaction is typical — the movie has gotten a very mixed reaction from critics and film geeks.
My viewing has prompted a deep dive into interviews and analysis of the film, and I thought I’d share some of the insights into The Neon Demon ending, the symbology and metaphors both obvious and more hidden. I’ll also attempt to answer some of your The Neon Demon questions.

Alex Garland‘s Annihilation is quietly wrapping up filming and I wish this movie had an official release date so I could start counting down the days until its release. It’s hard to imagine a more perfect marriage of filmmaker and material – Jeff VanderMeer‘s 2014 novel is one of the best genre novels I’ve read in a long time and Garland has already proven himself to be adept with small scale, creepy, adult science fiction with last year’s Ex Machina (one of our favorite films of 2015).
While the production has been pretty quiet, a slew of images from the set have been slowing arriving online via social media over the past few weeks, giving us our first kind-of, sort-of official look at this film.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are currently hard at work on their Han Solo film, but before they boarded the Star Wars franchise, the duo may have helped to launch another franchise with The LEGO Movie. After its huge financial success, the Lego movies are now a huge priority for Warner Bros., as they’re working on spinoffs, including one focused on Batman.
And there’s also The LEGO Movie Sequel, which will bring back Emmett (Chris Pratt) and Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks). Lord and Miller aren’t returning to direct the animated film, but they did write the first draft of the script — and BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg will now rewrite it.
Below, learn more about The LEGO Movie Sequel rewrite.

With all the intellectual property being turned into movies nowadays simply for the benefit of brand recognition, it’s amazing that the well-known children’s educational book Everyone Poops hasn’t been turned into some kind of family comedy. Instead, a new sketch from the NBC variety show Maya & Marty (hosted by Maya Rudolph and Martin Short) imagines Everyone Poops as a whistleblower thriller where the American government and most of the citizens of the United States don’t want to believe the truth.
