December 1722, second and eldest surviving son of
Svasti Sri Giriraj Chakrachudamani Narayantyadi Vividha
Virudavali Sirajman Manonnat Shrimant Maharajadhiraj Sri
Sri Raja Nara Bhupal Shah, Raja of Gorkha, by his second
wife, Sri Sri Rani Kaushalyavati Devi, educ. privately.
Became Heir Apparent on the death of his half-twin
brother. Became Co-Regnt with his step-mother, 1737.
Succeeded on the death of his father, 3rd
April 1743. Attacked and defetaed his brother-in-law,
Maharaja Digbandham of Makwanpur, and annexed his
principality in 1762. Conquered Katmandu, ejected Raja
Jaya Prakash Malla and seized the Nepalese throne, 24th
September 1768. Crowned at the Nyasal Chowk, Hanuman
Dhoka Palace, Katmandu, 25th September 1768.
Granted the title of Sri Maharaja Bahadur Shamsher
Jang, and appointed to an Imperial mansab of
5,000 zat and 4,000 sawar, by Emperor Shah
Alam II, 12th March 1772. m. (first)
at Makwanpur, 1738 (not completed), H.H. Sri Sri Sri
Chautaria Maharani Indra Kumari Devi (b. 1726; d.s.p.
1759), daughter of Sri Sri Sri Maharaja Hemkarna Sen,
Maharaja of Makwanpur. m. (second) at
Gorakpur, February 1740, H.H. Sri Sri Sri Maharani
Narendra Rajya Lakshmi Devi (d. by sati 11th
January 1775), daughter of Abhiman Singh, a Brahmin from
Benares. m. (a) Icchavati Devi. m. (b)
Dayavati Devi (d.s.p.). m.
(c) Lakshmi Devi (d.s.p.). m.
(d) a daughter of Babu Shibadatta Singh. He d. at
Devaghat, Nawakhot, 11th January 1775 (when
one wife and eight concubines committed sati),
