Hey guys. So I am going on a week-long school climbing trip to Joshua Tree. It'll be my first time there!
I'm not sure which campsite we will be camping at yet, but is hammock camping allowed in J Tree? I know that it's not okay to hang hammocks on the trees cause they could damage them and cause them to fall down, but if I set up my hammock on a couple rocks, would I be allowed to sleep there? I couldn't find anything on the National Park website about it.
I'm not opposed to bringing a tent and I'll probably bring one anyway just in case I can't find anywhere to set up the hammock. Just wondering if you guys knew anything about this. Thanks a bunch!
Planning on doing some climbing near Ryan Mountain (cryptic 5.8) on Sunday and hoping to park, hike in and wilderness camp the night before, as rezzies are clearly impossible.
In the past I’ve done the boy scout trail, it’s an easy one mile away from the road. But I’m looking for somewhere closer to Ryan with a place to leave the car and register.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
The JTNP Facebook page posted this, FYI:
Last night's storms caused major road damage in and around Joshua Tree National Park. Currently most of Pinto Basin Road is closed including the South Entrance as well as all dirt roads. Our roads crew is working hard to assess the damage, report closures and improve road conditions. Be prepared for mud and sand in the roads and for road closures. Follow our Twitter feed for road updates.
It is pouring rain with loud thunder and lighting lighting up the whole valley. I feel bad for all the unexpectedly wet campers. Anyone coming out be careful, lots of flash flooding I am guessing.
Hi All,
I'm driving out to Joshua Tree after a work event in San Diego in the beginning of the December. Any suggestions on where to stay nearby? Which route to take and what to hit on the way?
Thanks!
EDIT: I won't be able to camp since I'm flying in from Philadelphia a few days before. I plan on making it there on a Friday morning (very early), staying out there for the day and driving back Saturday morning for a flight out.
I'm in town for work and have my late afternoon's early evening free for 2 evenings. what do you recommend.
I would love to see the most interesting parts to get some pictures. like to hike and good to get some pictures close to the road of all the great scenery.
would love to hear what you all recommend.
In Joshua tree are the sportsman club they are holding the annual Rock and mineral show. There are all kinds of neat beads, fossils, minerals, jewelery, crystals, cut rocks. It's fun I went this morning takes about half an hour to an hour to see everything depending on how fast you want to view everything.
In Landers there is the Gubler's orchids festival. It is very neat they have a bunch of local charites that have booths set up selling funnel cakes, local brewery, cheese, wine, hamburgers , and hot dogs. Inside they have the huge green houses full of orchids also Venus fly traps and pitcher plants. They are doing free green house tours and there are classes on orchids and you get to pot your own for a nominal charge to take home. I went to both and had lots of fun!
Edit this *weekend today and tomorrow
Arrive at the park’s West Entrance in Joshua Tree. Be sure to make a quick stop at Joshua Tree Visitor Center before entering. Browse the exhibits, watch the introductory films (upon request), and remember to check the current schedule of ranger programs.
Head into the park and stop at Hidden Valley. It’s a great place for an introduction to the interesting rock formations.
If you have enough time, drive over to Barker’s Dam, which is also worth a visit. Head south past Cap Rock to Keys View Road. Drive to its end for one of the most stunning desert vistas in the park. On a clear day you can peer clear across southern California to Signal Mountain in Mexico. Make the return trip to Park Blvd.
Continuing along Park Blvd you’ll find plenty of opportunities to snap photos of intriguing Joshua Trees. Stop at Jumbo Rocks to checkout some really cool rocks including Giant Marbles. Return to Park Blvd and head south on Pinto Basin Road. Stop at Cholla Cactus Garden before exiting at South Entrance to I-10.
I bought tickets for the festival but turns out I'm not going to make it. If anyone wants my tickets I'm willing to give a significant discount
I have NO idea how Ryan, Belle, or Indian Cove will look like in the wee hours of that Friday if I were to try my look with first come.
Anyone have a site booked for those days at any campground that cannot go anymore? I'll venmo/paypal you for your spot!
Or any advice of what to do would be amazing!
I will be solo hiking CRHT via the usual west to east route. Is it common for solo hikers to hitchhike back to their car @ Black Rock area? Is it possible to get an Uber?
Is it possible to enter the park and camp at midnight? How do I make this happen?
