Is The Gig Economy Hurting Public Transit?

GIG ECONOMY

To some, it's the shared economy disrupting the old business models. To others, it's the gig economy that denies workers full-time hours and a living wage. Regardless of its name, the new economy is disrupting more than the established business norms. It is forcing grown-ups to live with their parents and is likely causing the decline in public transit ridership.

What It Is Really Like Living In Toronto's Downtown Core

MAN WALKING TORONTO SHADOW

I thought living in the frenetic hustle of downtown would make me less patient and desensitized -- the truth is since moving down here, I've become more empathetic and aware of the marginalized population and my role in that marginalization.

New In Town: Brunch At Chase Fish & Oyster

BRUNCH

The Chase Fish & Oyster, the more relaxed sister of the upscale Chase fine dining spot, is the latest restaurant to throw their Sunday brunch hat in the proverbial ring. Having just debuted their menu at the end of April, I had a chance to taste a few of the menu items.

The Simple Reason Behind Toronto's Marijuana Dispensary Crackdown

CANNABIS TORONTO

Cannabis Canada, the trade association that represents Canada's Licensed Producers of medical marijuana, has been lobbying the city quite extensively. But these efforts have been ongoing now for some time -- why the urgency to crack down now? The answer is not as simple as we'd like it to be.

Sexless in The City: The Search for Modern-Day Love as a Woman With a Disability

It's Not Fair Competition Unless Uber Plays By The Rules

It is not fair to put taxi drivers through strenuous regulations in order to be able to make ends meet and support their families, and then give a free card to their competitor and allow them to do the same job with almost no restrictions.

The Moms Behind The Business Of Mother's Day

MOTHERS DAY FLORIST

The thing I realized when I delivered flowers for my mom years ago during Mother's Day is that at the end of the day, your Mom is just happy that you remembered. The smile on every woman's face when she answered the door and I stood there holding a pile of freshly cut flowers was truly heartwarming. Mom's love us so much, and unconditionally, and ask for so little in return.

Management Lessons From The Leafs' 'Winning' Season

MIKE BABCOCK

Ever since Brendan Shanahan was hired as team president, he has chanted the same mantra: The Leafs will rebuild the franchise in a slow, disciplined way, developing young talent from within, giving them time to mature in the minors, and not being distracted by any shiny penny, over-the-hill stars being dangled in front of them by other teams looking to dump big salaries.

I Have Fallen In Love With Toronto

TORONTO

There is a lot of thought that goes into marrying a city. I mean, do you get along? Do you have the same taste in art and music? But most importantly, will you still excite each other day in and day out for as long as you both shall live?

The Night I Sang Opera For Justin Bieber

MEGHAN LINDSAY BIEBER

One moment, I was in Spain, strolling the Passeig de Gracia, eating tapas and sipping red wine. The next, I was singing for Justin Bieber. Perhaps it was jet lag. Perhaps it was the parade of superheroes that casually strolled by me as I donned my Marie Antoinette wig. Either way, it was the most surreal evening of my life.

It's Time For Toronto To Become A Car-Free City

BIKE STREETCAR TORONTO

As Toronto continues its rapid growth, the limitations of travel by car are becoming ever more apparent. Average commute times have increased to 33 minutes as the city's main arteries struggle to keep up with the more than 1.1 million (2011) vehicles on city roads each day. While the rhetoric around change has been positive, action has been achingly slow.

About Toronto

Toronto is Canada's largest city and the capital of Ontario, with more than 2.5 million people in the city proper and 5 million in the wider metropolitan area. It's considered the centre of Canada's banking and financial industry and one of the world's most multicultural cities, with more than 140 languages and dialects spoken within its border. Just over 30 per cent of Toronto residents speak a language other than English or French at home. The city was established as the town of York in 1793 by Governor John Graves Simcoe and was incorporated as Toronto in 1834. It's home to a vibrant arts and culture scene, the Toronto International Film Festival, NXNE, the AGO, one of the largest gay pride festivals in the world and four major league sports teams: The Toronto Blue Jays, the Toronto Argonauts, the Toronto Raptors and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
