A wildfire that started on May 1, 2016 outside of Fort McMurray, Alberta was fuelled by hot temperatures, low humidity and high winds into an inferno that engulfed the city of 70,000. The province's largest-ever fire evacuation forced people to abandon their homes as flames shot up by along the main highway out of the city. On May 4, 2016, Alberta declared a provincial state of emergency.
