Caring for children living with HIV in Saint Petersburg, Russian Federation

Ms Ban Soon-taek, the wife of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, visited the clinic for children living with HIV at the Republican Clinical Infectious Diseases Hospital in Saint Petersburg, Russian Federation, on 16 June and met with women affected by HIV. During her visit, Ms Ban was familiarized with how the clinic helps children living with HIV with medical and psychological problems.

Prime Minister of Thailand celebrates the country’s success in eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis

The Prime Minister of Thailand, Prayut Chan-o-cha, received a certificate from the World Health Organization (WHO) on 20 June confirming the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis in the country. Thailand is the first country in Asia to reach the milestone, which was officially announced earlier this month at the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Ending AIDS.

UNAIDS gala honours former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and raises more than US$ 1 million for UNAIDS

Supporters of UNAIDS attended its annual fundraising gala on 13 June. Held at Design Miami Basel on the eve of the Art Basel art festival, the gala raised more than US$ 1 million to support the work of UNAIDS to increase access to HIV prevention and treatment services worldwide, particularly for women and children.

On 10 June, the last day of the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Ending AIDS, held from 8 to 10 June in New York, United States of America, representatives of United Nations and women-led civil society organizations, young women and government leaders and women living with and affected by HIV, came together to inspire and move forward the role of women in the response to AIDS.

Children, adolescent girls and young women: preventing new HIV infections

Adolescent girls and young women are disproportionately affected by HIV. Of new infections among adolescents and young people aged 10–24 years, 65% are among adolescent girls and young women aged 10–24 globally. Much more needs to be done to promote prevention programmes based on gender equality, fulfilling sexual and reproductive rights and guaranteeing access to services for this key group, according to a panel meeting entitled “Children, adolescent girls and young women: preventing new HIV infections”.

The AIDS epidemic will not be ended without efforts to end discrimination, respond to exclusion and advance social justice, according to a panel meeting held on 9 June during the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Ending AIDS, taking place in New York, United States of America, from 8 to 10 June.

Strategy
At the end of 2015, the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board adopted a new strategy to end the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat by 2030.
