Map: A guide to Insecure filming locations in Los Angeles

HBO's new series Insecureabout a young professional woman "living, loving, and fucking up"is a window into the lives of regular black people. It's a slice of black life. And, it's a slice of Los Angeles. Shot entirely in LA, Insecure not only "excels at portraying flawed people who aren't just oblivious jerks," it excels at capturing life here without ever referencing green juice or yoga or aspiring actors. We shop at Rite Aid. We eat from taco trucks. We dump our unwanted couches on the street.

Here's what Issa Rae, the comedy's creator and star, told Vanity Fair about depicting South Los Angeles, where she grew up: "You don’t really get to see it on television," she says. "That was very important to me, to actually film in that neighborhood and not, like, pretend to film in it." So we get glimpses of Windsor Hills, View Park, Inglewood, Leimert Park, mostly through establishing shots of garden apartments, strip malls, and spots such as Randy's Donuts and the Forum. We've compiled some of the places in a handy map below, which we'll update throughout the season. (If we missed any locations, let us know in the comments.)

1 Issa's apartment

The apartment building where Issa lives with her boyfriend plays itself IRL. The Dunes is an actual, two-story, 52-unit complex in Inglewood, where a two-bedroom rents for $1,550. Built in 1961, it looks like a lot of Los Angeles apartment buildings: a simple, stucco box that wraps around a pool or garden, palm trees out front, a name, and a bit of retro charm.

2 Issa raps

Issa raps and strategically runs into her longtime crush Daniel at Mavericks Flat, an historic music venue in Crenshaw that used to be known as the "Apollo of the West." It's still run as a club today, and the building, as of publication date, is for sale for $3.6 million.

3 Issa's birthday dinner

Issa's low-key 29th birthday is spent at Merkato Ethiopian Restaurant, one of the dozen or so stores and restaurants that line a one-block stretch of Fairfax in LA's Little Ethiopia district.

4 Issa and Molly brunch

One of the prettiest restaurant settings in Los Angeles is the Commissary, where it feels like you're dining in a green house. It's run by celebrity chef Roy Choi, and it's located on the second-floor of the Line Hotel in Koreatown.

5 Inglewood High School

Thomas Jefferson Middle School, the fictional school where Issa works with kids through her job with the nonprofit, "We got y'all," is set at Inglewood High School.

6 Beach Day

After Issa learns her BFF Molly, who grew up in LA, had never been to the beach until she was an adult, Issa takes her students to the beachiest beach in all of LA, Santa Monica.

7 Engagement party

Molly meets her first date through an exclusive dating website at this brick-clad building, which built in 1928, is called the Carondelet House; it's a gorgeous and popular venue for event rentals.
