It's not a test.. you're just verifying/updating your security information. On the security checkup page, does your recovery information look correct? "All done." Recent activity look normal? "Looks good." Account permissions set correctly? "Done." Now you see the 3 green check marks and the "Continue to account settings" button.. and you wait for Google to implement the extra storage. It's not rocket science.
@Gary Reiner - When you finish the security checkup the button at the bottom is for account settings, so it's likely you already finished it if you're looking at the Account settings page.
It reads above, "After you’ve gone through the checkup successfully, you’ll see three green checkboxes (see below) that confirm you’re eligible for the free storage and, more importantly, that you’ve taken steps to enhance your online safety. We’ll be granting the storage automatically to everyone around 28 February 2015 and we’ll send you an email when your adjustment is complete."
I can't get the 2GB extra. I'm not a work or education user. The 3 green boxes didn't light up for me since I don't want to give a recovery phone number. I understand that my info is secure, but the less info I give out on the internet, the less that can be stolen from me. How can I get the 2GB extra without giving a recovery phone?
Doesn't want to give alternative phone number to confirm identity because storing online data is bad, but is then upset for not getting an additional 2GB of online storage... um, what?
You could get all conspiracy theorist and think that not giving out your phone number may protect you, or you could just be a realist and accept the fact that nobody gives a crap about your information enough to hack it.
maybe you could point me to it.. cause all I see is "Google Apps for Work and Google Apps for Education users are not eligible for the bonus storage but should still consider taking the Security Checkup." please enlighten me.
"As our way of saying thanks for completing the checkup by 17 February 2015, we’ll give you a permanent 2 gigabyte bump in your Google Drive storage plan."
Thanks for the opportunity. I completed it about 15 minutes ago, and still have yet to receive the additional 2 GB. Does it take time or am I missing something? I don't use the apps for work or as a student either.
On Safer Internet Day, could Google help train users not to click on shortened URLs, especially when presented in the context of a free offer for which users only need to answer a few questions about their security settings?
Given that there was an aesthetic choice to rely on URL shortening, those who follow url-shortening conventions might have expected Google to have used the g.co shortened form, rather than goo.gl, to indicate that the short URL leads to a legitimate, official Google site. (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/07/gco-official-url-shortcut-for-google.html).
Shortened URLs are a time sink for security-conscious users who have to look up conventions for decyphering them, like injecting "info" into them for the .gl examples here:
Modify http://goo.gl/ccgyV0 to http://goo.gl/info/ccgyV0 to see that it really leads to https://security.google.com/settings/security/secureaccount.
Modify http://goo.gl/JBKqaY to http://goo.gl/info/JBKqaY to see that it really leads to https://www.google.com/safetycenter/everyone/start/
Are those primary URLs really so cumbersome? On the contrary, I think they're beautiful, simple, comforting, and reinforce good user behavior. (Yes, I am a geek, but we want to encourage that, right?)
On the other hand, I did have to Google more trivia in order to convince myself of the safety of the links, and I suppose Google did get more eyeballs (and hence business) out of that followon effort ... but come on. Let's encourage end users to be more aware of the legitimacy of what they're clicking on. Let's make it "Even Safer Internet Day."
Thanks you for raising this point so eloquently, Stacey. Shortened urls are such a pain to determine trust, and I don't really see the advantage to using them - especially when they're behind anchor text in a blog post that isn't on a clearly related domain like google.com
I agree that URL shortening services are very often overused in situations they're not needed for shortening and that they make it very time consuming for security conscious people to figure out where they head.
That said, I suspect what's happening is more for analytics than it is for shortening.
That is, I'm sure Google can bring up stats on the particular shortcode link posted here to see how many people, even without referrer information, got the link from this article or someone who had read this article.
stacey curtis, I LOVE your enthusiasm and appreciate so much more obvious passion for safe browsing. "Even Safer Internet Day" is what it should be EVERYDAY! ~Signed with love, #SnowdenSnowbunny ♥ =D
Hey, I found someone has made themselves a follower of me. She is a really dodgy profile and I do not want any connection with her. How do I remove her or hide completely from her? (i.e. I don't want her to even appear on my Google+ page)
Hey- I can't put in my phone number because it won't accept short codes. Because of this, I only got two checks at the end, not three. Do I still get the 2GB?
No SMS Cell Phone = No google account recovery = no 2 Free GB extra, thanks google for getting my hopes up. Seriously, i tried my Pinger account, my skype account with skypein, and my landline, and never got the Verification Code. Again thanks google...
Hi I need help!!! I can't type on the Google mobile website everything I try to type the keyboard pops up and then after just right back down? What do I do?
If you REALLY need too much online storage, getting a script to Office 365 is the way to go. If you're a professional that uses Office or have college students, you get five licences of their full product automatically updated for about $100/year, plus you get UNLIMITED OneDrive online storage, (used to be 1TB) for each license. That's less than $8.50/mo for unlimited storage for up to five users plus a full office suite. That's less than Netflix, no comparison, but just saying. Just depends on professional needs, but I think if you need that much online storage, you need a reason and just aren't storing family photos. We pay for a lot of other services that cost more for streaming services, so it isn't too far out of the question. BTW, I don't work for Microsoft, just looking for the best deals.
Just to remember if you use Google drive and save documents in Google format these documents Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides or items shared with you don’t count toward your storage space. If you use google drive for family photography or any other photography these photos aren't counted towards storage space if you save them as standard size photos 2048x2048 pixels. If you save videos shorter than 15 minutes those videos aren't counted towards your storage space. And with drive you get office suite. And all that for free. Can't see logic in purchasing MS package when same thing is offered for free.
BTW thanks for the extra 2GB on Google Drive. This is my main drive for phone, tablet, etc. as my android devices aren't as OneDrive compatible, which is mainly used professionally rather than personal. Thanks again Google!
So what else aren't Google Apps for Work users eligible for? Bonus storage, Google Now cards from Gmail, automatic calendar entries from Gmail, Inbox... Getting tired of using a limited account.
I am not sure if Google has usability people or training, but I think it has to be a usability guideline failure to show an image of a button, then if the person clicks that button, you give them a success page telling them the security check is complete and they will get their bonus in a few weeks. Right now if you click the button above that is exactly what happens. Because you have embedded a success page graphic with the action button in a way that is not very usable.
Granted most people should figure out the bad usability, but that is not the goal of usability to have to force people to figure out why this is seeming weird and figure out oh, the button wasn't a button...
im doing security checkup's since google launched this services but for confirming extra 2gb i did security checkup today but not getting extra 2GB in my drive please help Google Drive Team
My check-up said that my account was logged into by three different IP addresses (all in my area). Is this normal? I changed my password just in case but it is still concerning. Help.
This can happen if you have other devices that access your account (checking email on your phone, for instance) in addition to a computer. Each device will have its own IP address.
By performing the check I noticed that my old android phone, which I sold a year ago is still included in the list of my android devices. I tried to remove it from the list but I could not. Is there a way to manage this list and remove the old stuff? I could only set that the old phone should not get listed in GooglePlay as a possible target device for installation. That is not exactly what I want. Could you help me please?
Did just do the check and all looks good to me. No unnessary privileges or apps. Used the check before and will use in future again. Curious though when the Security Check i just did will result in this 2GB Storage bonus?
And to work around it, I used my GVoice # and deleted my cell. But now it looks like there is absolutely NO way to put my cell back in without using SMS. It was there before, just not verified by SMS.
Major fail, guys. Use the same process as 2-step auth...
Me too, rarePOSTER! I have been wondering the same thing. It is very difficult to fine any help when searching this out. ...near impossible I suspect. I haven't found anything yet anyhow.
I had 4 green check marks when I completed the secutiry chck - not 3. The third one said "Access for less secure apps enabled" I suppose that Google software still upgrades those who complete the check even if you get a 4th check mark?
That should be fine. I just checked that on an account (which requires that the "less secure apps" setting be enabled for Outlook integration) and it shows 4 check marks. As long as you get to the point where it says "Nicely done, you're all set." with the green shield at the top that's the main thing that should tell you ... "your'e all set"
Why do you want a cellphone #? I have disabled all text messages and incoming calls on my cellphone because all I use it for is 911, Now you won't let me finish the security check.
Sign up for a free Google Voice number at voice.google.com and get your required text through that free service and then remember it's a FREE addition to your FREE account that you don't have to pay for.
I just ran the security checkup on my account, but I only got two Green check boxes, instead of three. Am I still eligible for the 2GB bumb on 2/28? Anyone?
thank you Google. I know you and other big companies get a bad rap, but if I had to pick one company I actually think WANTS to keep my data save, it's you
I also understand your right to make money from me, I have NO PROBLEM with that.
I tried before; seem to have 'lost' this post: I have 3 Google email accounts. I don't know whether the 'check' applies to all 3 or ? I have 4 computers, incl one older Mac. I am 'doing the drill' on all of them; am I wasting my time? It happens so quick, what is the process doing? Also, when I click on "continue to account settings"; it doesn't 'go' anywhere (at least on this Win 7). (Using Chrome browser). Finally; how do I get back to this page and response to my comments later; "googledrive.blogspot.com" - I don't recall ever seeing a link for blogspot. Other than that, I have no questions... ;-) Thank you
For Christ's sake people, read the ENTIRE bloody article! It clearly states that if you complete the security check and get the green check marks, you will receive the extra 2GB on the 28th February — that is AT THE END OF THE MONTH. Google will inform you when the extra allowance has been applied to your account.
I agree the article mentions the 2GB will show up Feb. 28, but the test ends in a very confusing way on the App Testing page. It just leaves you hanging. Why didn't Google include some sort of done or finished message -- it would have made things much more clear for us testers.

I have visited several help pages with the same request. I do not need much; I do use Google Drive (since Blogger was assassinated) to write idea papers. I always include links and information that is excerpted from the pages linked to. I extrapolate from this gleaned information expounding on my theories and ideas. I find such wool gathering helpful. What I am asking for is to be able then to access my papers created in Drive from a net search, like I used to be able to do in Blogger. I have not been able to find any way to tag these papers, Neither does a search for the name of the paper help; nor does including drive or my name . Even if there was a 2 step way to post these on an accessible site it would be acceptable. What Drive appears to be is a word processor like WORD. I do not want that, I want a site similar to Blogger which allows me simply to write and post. Can I do that with Drive?
Here is sign up link and you get 30GB free storage on Hubic. More than Dropbox, Google Drive, SugarSync, Cubby or Box but combines features of each while keeping it simple. Use this link and you get 30GB assigned (that is 25 + 5 GB)..... https://hubic.com/en/offers?referral=ERDMMU
Just so that you know.. why they are… Hubic is provided by 3rd largest hosting company in the world, with 150,000 servers, so they are not going to go anywhere.
(If anyone signs up using my referral link, you can change the language of Hubic to English or other language in the right upper corner of the website.)

Doesn't want to give alternative phone number to confirm identity because storing online data is bad, but is then upset for not getting an additional 2GB of online storage... um, what?

ReplyDeleteDid just do the check and all looks good to me. No unnessary privileges or apps. Used the check before and will use in future again. Curious though when the Security Check i just did will result in this 2GB Storage bonus?
ReplyDeleteJust finished the checkup, I had 5 green checkboxes. No email confirmation = No 2 gigs later?
ReplyDeleteGoogle you are confusing us on this one.
Checkup done, waiting for the 2GB.
ReplyDeleteSo Glad that Google really cares, That's right keep those hacker's out.
DeleteNice one, thanks!
ReplyDeletegreat
ReplyDeletevery good
ReplyDeletegood
ReplyDeleteCan't complete the Checkup, as SMS is the ONLY auth method. I disabled SMS on my contract years ago, and am not about to reenable it just for this.
ReplyDeleteGoogle 2-step auth allows for an automated VOICE call. Why does the Checkup not have it available?
And to work around it, I used my GVoice # and deleted my cell. But now it looks like there is absolutely NO way to put my cell back in without using SMS. It was there before, just not verified by SMS.
DeleteMajor fail, guys. Use the same process as 2-step auth...
Does anyone know if we need to have a phone number in the Recovery information section to complete this Security Checkup?
ReplyDeleteI left it blank, but I got the message that I was done and all set.
Me too, rarePOSTER! I have been wondering the same thing. It is very difficult to fine any help when searching this out. ...near impossible I suspect. I haven't found anything yet anyhow.
DeleteI love google drive. Its everything windows has to offer only usable!
ReplyDeleteThank you Google!!
ReplyDeletedone. gimmie my free stuff! lol thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi, I have done with security check up. Thanks Google!!
ReplyDeletePlease let me know when can i expect 2GB upgrade?
The above article says the 2Gb will rollout around the 28th of February.
DeleteI had 4 green check marks when I completed the secutiry chck - not 3. The third one said "Access for less secure apps enabled" I suppose that Google software still upgrades those who complete the check even if you get a 4th check mark?
ReplyDeleteThat should be fine. I just checked that on an account (which requires that the "less secure apps" setting be enabled for Outlook integration) and it shows 4 check marks. As long as you get to the point where it says "Nicely done, you're all set." with the green shield at the top that's the main thing that should tell you ... "your'e all set"
DeleteYou're the awesomest, Google! #GoogleForPresident
ReplyDeleteWhy do you want a cellphone #? I have disabled all text messages and incoming calls on my cellphone because all I use it for is 911, Now you won't let me finish the security check.
ReplyDeleteAnd you won't take my land line.
DeleteSign up for a free Google Voice number at voice.google.com and get your required text through that free service and then remember it's a FREE addition to your FREE account that you don't have to pay for.

ReplyDeleteI just ran the security checkup on my account, but I only got two Green check boxes, instead of three. Am I still eligible for the 2GB bumb on 2/28? Anyone?
ReplyDeleteI am not receiving Security SMS in India. Who can help me?
ReplyDelete2GB no aplly
ReplyDeleteNo cell so no SMS so no 2GB Fair ?
ReplyDeleteSecurity Check = DONE
ReplyDeleteG-Team don't forget me !!! i will waiting @ 28 FEB ! ;-)
thanks
ReplyDeletethank you Google. I know you and other big companies get a bad rap, but if I had to pick one company I actually think WANTS to keep my data save, it's you
ReplyDeleteI also understand your right to make money from me, I have NO PROBLEM with that.
How would I have found this 'check' option if not from slickddeals, net (where I found it).
ReplyDeleteI tried before; seem to have 'lost' this post: I have 3 Google email accounts. Other than that, I have no questions... ;-) Thank you
ReplyDeleteOk, i will try it.
ReplyDeleteI did the security check but didn't get the FREE 2 gigs of storage as promised.
ReplyDeleteFor Christ's sake people, read the ENTIRE bloody article! It clearly states that if you complete the security check and get the green check marks, you will receive the extra 2GB on the 28th February — that is AT THE END OF THE MONTH. Google will inform you when the extra allowance has been applied to your account.
ReplyDeleteI agree the article mentions the 2GB will show up Feb. 28, but the test ends in a very confusing way on the App Testing page. It just leaves you hanging. Why didn't Google include some sort of done or finished message -- it would have made things much more clear for us testers.

ReplyDeleteI have visited several help pages with the same request. I do not need much; I do use Google Drive (since Blogger was assassinated) to write idea papers. I always include links and information that is excerpted from the pages linked to. I extrapolate from this gleaned information expounding on my theories and ideas. I find such wool gathering helpful.
ReplyDeleteWhat I am asking for is to be able then to access my papers created in Drive from a net search, like I used to be able to do in Blogger.
Is this REALLY 2GB?
ReplyDeleteHere is sign up link and you get 30GB free storage on Hubic. More than Dropbox, Google Drive, SugarSync, Cubby or Box but combines features of each while keeping it simple. Use this link and you get 30GB assigned (that is 25 + 5 GB)..... https://hubic.com/en/offers?referral=ERDMMU
ReplyDeleteJust so that you know.. why they are… Hubic is provided by 3rd largest hosting company in the world, with 150,000 servers, so they are not going to go anywhere.
(If anyone signs up using my referral link, you can change the language of Hubic to English or other language in the right upper corner of the website.)
I hope the phrase "by Feb. 17" means that those of us who've done so today, Feb. 17, are still eligible.
