Frequently Asked Questions around Black Friday
Black Friday is the number one shopping event that happens every November where customers can get the biggest discounts and deals of the whole year.
Black Friday is still relatively new to the UK but in 2015 shoppers in the US spent approximately $12 billion on that weekend and of that figure, almost a quarter was generated from online sales.
What’s
Black
Friday?
Black Friday is a big deal to most online shops, especially when customers are willing to spend big over the course of one weekend. Black Friday is continuously growing in popularity with more and more shops around the world taking part and prices becoming more competitive every year.
Black Friday
Meaning,
Origin
and History
-
Black Friday began as a clever way for retailers to clear out all of their old stock by reducing prices outrageously before the Christmas season officially starts at the end of November, in order to make room for new stock.
-
Black Friday has actually been around for a long time. In fact, the first Black Friday event happend in 1932 in the US. But it wasn't until the 1960s before people began to name it 'Black Friday'.
-
Why the term ‘Black Friday’? The most commonly repeated story is because retailers book keepers used to record losses using red ink, and profits using black ink. After retailers recorded operating losses for an entire year, on the day after Thanksgiving, profits would skyrocket (recorded in black ink of course), hence the term Black Friday was coined.
What Day is Black Friday?
Black Friday is always the Friday after Thanksgiving. As Thanksgiving is always the fourth Friday in November, it traditionally falls in line with the start of the Christmas season. In 2017, Black Friday is on November 24.
What’s The Difference Between
Black Friday and Cyber Monday?
Historically Black Friday occurred in stores, with customers rushing to grab as many deals as possible before they’re all taken. The experience can be rough but many enjoy the thrill of it.
Cyber Monday, on the other hand, is an event that is carried out almost entirely online where customers don’t have to walk in store to fight off other deal-seekers.
Nowadays, as shoppers and retailers appreciate the convenience and importance of online shopping, you can find nearly all Black Friday sales and promotions online as well. If you're lucky you'll find discounts that are available exclusively for online customers.
