Hello everyone, Hurricane season is in full swing now and with another storm coming, it seems like a good time to post another reminder about how to get weather reports, live news and weather tracking information. I realize that not everyone here has a need for this information right now but hopefully it is helpful for new cordcutters or those in harm's way that need updated information. With our on-demand watching habits and less frequent reliance on live TV, it can be easy for cordcutters to lose track of weather events. We strongly encourage to pay extra attention during hurricane season to the weather forecasts, advisories, and other important notices regarding road closures and evacuations.
Please add any additional recommendations for live news and weather in the comments. I am adding more resources tonight! If you find any links that are broken or stop working, please PM me immediately. Thank you.
Official Resources:
Your state's official website - look for official emergency notices and updates. Many states also have social media accounts too.
Resources Everyone Should Keep Handy:
Tropical Tibits - Probably one of the best sites available for tracking storms.
CNN Text Only website: CNN has a text only version of its website for those with a weak connection or limited data.
You can now watch two channels at once by swiping up and doing a ‘press and hold’ on another channel.
Hi everybody, I recently switched from an indoor antenna to a rooftop, and I’m getting so many more channels. Besides just looking at TV Guide and guessing based on listings, are there any online resources for figuring out what type of channels they are, what type of shows they specialize in, etc? In greater Los Angeles area if that helps. Thanks!
I find that, often, TVs have a hard to see and/or access coax connection on the back. After 40 years of sore fingers and fumbling in a black plastic crevice at an odd angle on dozens of TVs (parents, me, many moves, many equipment updates, changing cable services, cable boxes, going to antenna, etc.), I am so over this common industrial design mistake.
I have some extra small lengths of easy-to-use-with-fingers (miracles do happen), good quality cable left over from Fios and Xfinity. Also a bunch of gold and not gold cable connectors.
If I hook up these 1-2 foot/30-60 cm coax bits to my TV sets and use a coax cable connector (not splitter!) to link to the coax antenna cable going into the floor and back up to the roof, do I lose anything?
No, I don’t often disconnect but, I do end up disconnecting to dust, move, etc. enough, just want it to be easier. I’m calling it the Coax Dongle™ 😉
I have heard that the stick is actually better but my TV is mounted and I do not know if the stick will work as I have an older TV and there are no ports on the side of the TV.
Also, I think it may be better to have the Ethernet connection since I will be streaming high quality movies from this device. I do want to transition to Amazon smart devices in my home.
Will I notice a difference in performance going with the Cube? Thoughts? (Stick - $49.99, Cube - $69.99)
