MonoBook was the previous default skin for Wikimedia Foundation websites since MediaWiki's inception between 2002 and 2003, as the Phase III software that was designed to replace the old UseModWiki software that originally powered Wikipedia and the other Foundation wikis. After the switch to MediaWiki, it became the most popular and most widely supported skin in the library until it was finally supplanted by the Vector skin as the default on May 13, 2010 (MediaWiki 1.17, git #2833b07a), as a result of the efforts of the Wikipedia Usability Initiative to improve Wikipedia user experiences and potentially draw in more contributor participation.
