Refugee kids I met in Turkey. Kids are resilient. Give them a chance. My op-ed: world's shame.

  2. Prof of economics at UPenn, removed from plane for Algebra (which DOES have Arabic origins).

  3. "Listen, whoever comes to you with 'dangerous' as nickname suggestion for the Donald, he's the Trump plant. Don't forget that."

  4. If there was ever a nickname for appropriating, it is "dangerous."

  5. I mean, I can narrow the number of my friends who post about Trudeau on Facebook down to two hundred, give or take fifty. 🙄

  6. Facebook: Verify ID by identifying your friends from their photos. But uses photos they post, not their pics. Umm.

  7. Many gov'ts know they cannot effectively block content from everyone, but they can focus on attention and credibility, and succeed.

  8. Helps to shift from information as the unit analyzed in what gets blocked, and think conceptually about attention and credibility.

  9. New regimes of digital control: From censorship to demonization, info-glut, polarization & sowing doubt.

  10. Related to 's paper. My paper on new range of government responses to social media and dissent.

  11. Posted "Digital Opportunity Structures: Spheres, Fields, Networks, and Digital Mobilization"

  12. I mean, so happy to learn is writing about the Bernie Sanders movement/candidacy, and its (digital) infrastructure/angle!

  13. The avg cost of a GB has gone from $10 mill to $.09 interactive chart of hard drive prices

  14. That's the context: Information circulates but drowned in constant counterclaims, demonization, claims of manipulation & falsehood.

  15. Journalist on trial in Turkey just got attacked by gunman. On video. Immediate claim online: deliberate setup to get him sympathy.

  16. So happy to learn is writing about the Bernie Sanders movement/candidacy and its its (digital) infrastructure/angle.

  17. Facebook and Google both will sponsor both. How you know we've closed the era of pirates, entered the era of CEOs.

  18. Facebook just recommended I friend an old neighbor, in place I no longer live, never texted or emailed, and have no mutual FB friends. hmmm

  19. So when you zoom in, that's a photo of Trump giving a thumbs up over a photo of himself giving a thumbs up on NYT A1

  20. ಗೆ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುತ್ತರವಾಗಿ

. All groups suffer from confirmation bias and worse but we're not fully post-truth. But need to hang out to it. Fight for facts.

  21. Journalists don't need to be conduits. Everyone is their own conduit. Hunting facts, exposing lies—more crucial then ever. And needs skill.

  22. Seriously: Best thing journalists can do in 2016 is to hunt down facts. Every one. Hunt them all down—small and big.

  23. ..because pivot will cease to have any meaning, hence up for grabs.

  24. If this gets reported as a "pivot", I'll need a script to replace "pivot" with "bald eagle sings snow turbines." 🙄🙄

  25. Since January, crossborder ISIS rocket attacks killed 20, injured 70 in Kilis, Turkey

  26. Relevant to "data" vs "narrative" journalism. Smartest people can get it wrong. Multi-method, doubt, triangulate.

  27. So we need to distinguish the two, which is why it's good to discuss why people got something so wrong. /end

  28. We should not excoriate people for wrong predictions. Human affairs are messy. But there are mistakes and there is blatant lack of judgment.

  29. I don't like horse-race coverage: not empirical enough; often doesn't lead to understanding. I wish it were an asterisk, not the main story.

  30. Human affairs are messy. Anyone predicting too much with certainty will get it wrong. In my view, understanding is better than predicting.

  31. Be multi-method. Triangulate. Go deep. Learn history. Don't just talk to your friends. Look for data. Cast a skeptical eye. Synthesize.

  32. Poll questions are often based on what the small closed circle deciding the "narrative" thinks should be asked. Feedback cycles bring error.

  33. What's wrong with narrative journalism isn't the narrative part—it's that the narrative is often based on talking to a small, closed circle.

  34. There is also history. History is not based on polls but the best of it is a deeply empirical field. Yes, expertise needed to pick the good.

  35. I kept linking to research on Tea Party that showed beltway operative reading was wrong, and Trump version had legs.

  36. But the current "here's who won and lost this week" coverage is not deeper analytic understanding. Pile it all up not much there there. +

  37. Surveys are great—I use them—but ask anyone who works with them. They are limited tools. You *do* need deeper analytic understanding. +

  38. Data vs traditional journalism again? I'm no fan of the horse race coverage but there *are* ways to be empirically deeper besides polls.

  39. Yep, Davutoglu is gone. Long story short: Pres. Erdogan giveth, Pres. Erdogan taketh.

  40. Turkey may have a new prime minister in few weeks. (Erdogan is president, not prime minister, that's not changing.)

  41. ಗೆ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುತ್ತರವಾಗಿ

. Yeah, I know too much about pre-war Germany. See "Coming of the Third Reich", R.J. Evans.

  42. Yeah. Anything that is open by design, and not guarded voraciously, will eventually be colonized by more powerful.

  43. Again, activist sentenced to 6 months, Sanaa is sister who also jailed! Photo Via

  44. That said, US is a low-participation, high-apathy election country. The electorate is realigning. Nothing to take for granted. It's a fight.

  45. Democrats are unlikely to get stuck, unorganized, flailing, wondering who they loathe more the way Republicans did while Trump rode a wave.
