    Our country has always been a sanctuary. It's in our national identity. Its important to remember that loud mouthed racists on twitter or populists on the tele do not represent the soul nor the majority of our country. Better people do.

    What is British identity if it isn't about compassion and fairness? It's that fairness and compassion that has allowed so many friends and family of mine to come to Britain, helping make it flourish and make Britain better. Some came legally others not. Others in the grey area.

    [Thread] 1/2 I'm a son + great grandson of refugees. Mum was a child refugee from Nazi occupied France. Her parents miraculously survived but most of their family to the gas chambers + escaped with her in their arms to UK at end of WWII after being helped by resistance etc.
