Avoid Football Traffic With Waze

From June 10 - July 10, the Eurocup tournament will be taking place in France. While this is exciting news for fans, traffic is sure to be bad in cities hosting the games (Paris, Lyon, Nice, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Lens, Lille, and St-Etienne.)

To help you get around traffic throughout the tournament, don’t forget to keep Waze running so that you can benefit from real-time driver insights.

You should also take advantage of these features to help you get the most out of the app:

    1. Planned Drives: Take the stress out of getting to the game, or even a regular appointment, by planning your drive ahead of time. All you have to do is enter the time and date you need to arrive, and Waze will recommend the best time to leave. When it gets closer to the time of the event, Waze will send you a reminder with an updated departure time based on real-time conditions.

      1. To enjoy this feature, make sure reminder capabilities are enabled in your phone’s settings!

    1. Smart Calendar: When you give Waze access to your Calendar and/or Facebook, appointments and Facebook Events will automatically turn into Planned Drives.

    1. Speed Limits: Always know the speed limit when driving on new or familiar roads. You’ll be notified in case you start driving over the limit. It’s a smart way to avoid speeding tickets!

    1. Send Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA): Let family and friends know you’re on the way. Forget about those “Where are you?” messages and phone calls.

    1. Add a Stop: Need to make a quick stop? Add one with Waze to make sure you get the fastest route.

If you don’t have the app yet, you can download Waze here.

The Big Benefits Of A Map Raid

Community Spotlight takes a behind-the-scenes look at the at the contributions made by local communities and Map Editors on Waze. The community is made up of volunteers with a shared vision, working together for the common good.

At the beginning of May, we wrote about a Mega Map Raid taking place in South Africa.
If you’re unfamiliar with the term, a Map Raid is a time-limited event where Map Editors zero in on a specific part of the Waze map. Like a hackathon, a Map Raid allows Map Editors to work intensively on the map, making as many edits as possible within a given time frame.

This particular Map Raid focused on adding and verifying speed limits in South Africa. Adding speed limits to the Waze map is the all-important first step towards unlocking the feature in any country.

The Map Raid is still in progress, but the results are already too impressive not to share. Check out these before-and-after heat maps showing how many speed limits have been added during the raid.

Not too shabby, right? As you can see, Map Raids have a huge impact on map quality, which in turn has a big impact on driving with Waze. If you’d like to improve the quality of the map in your country, you can learn how to edit the map here.

We’d like to congratulate South Africa on their successful Map Raid. As a result of the community’s effort, the speed limits feature has been unlocked in the country!

Memorial Day Traffic 2016 - The Best & Worst Times To Drive

With millions of Americans traveling for Memorial Day weekend, traffic jams across the country are all but certain. Although traffic is inevitable, you can still save yourself a lot of time and frustration by knowing when it’s best to hit the road. To help you avoid traffic snarls and get the most out of your vacation, here are the best and worst times to drive this Memorial Day weekend. To make this prediction, Waze analyzed its 2015 Memorial Day app usage, as well as four weeks prior and post holiday to create a traffic comparison baseline. Here’s what we found:

The Best Days To Travel Nationally On Memorial Day Weekend:

Saturday: There is no significant change in drivers on the road or alerts on this day.
Sunday: There are less drivers on the road than a normal Sunday and no increase in alerts.

Both Saturday and Sunday are great times to drive on Memorial Day weekend. If traffic is a deciding factor, consider planning your travel time around these two days.
The Worst Days To Travel Nationally On Memorial Day Weekend:
Friday: Friday is the day most people head out for the long weekend. Waze sees an increase in cars on the road from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with the highest peak falling between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. There is also a 36% increase in hazard alerts (potholes, roadkill, etc.) this day.

Monday:
If you plan on traveling on Monday, driving behavior is similar to a regular weekend with low usage in the morning and evening peaks and high usage from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The highest amount of drivers tend to be on the roads between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

This data is averaged and generalized for all of the United States. Scroll to the end of this post to see what times you should (and shouldn’t) leave if you live in one of the eleven cities we analyzed below.

We Asked, Wazers Answered!

Wazers all around the world pride themselves on proper driving technique and an in-depth knowledge of driving laws and courtesies specific to their region. So when we posed this question on Facebook:

…we received an overwhelming response! 802 Facebook comments after posting, we’d found out the biggest irks that Wazers see on a day-to-day basis.

Here are the top habits as decided by the Waze community:

10. Hastily cutting across multiple lanes of traffic to get to the exit
9. Cutting off truck drivers
8. Waiting until the last second to merge into a long line of cars already patiently waiting
7. Tailgating (other cars driving too close behind you)
6. Merging onto the freeway at a slow speed
5. Not using turn signals
4. Cutting off someone who is going significantly faster than you, only to drive slower
3. Incessant, reactionary braking
2. Texting and driving

And what was the number one bad habit that Wazers want to see kicked to the curb?

1. Using the left lane as a normal driving lane, and not as a passing lane

Community Spotlight: South Africa Prepares For Mega Map Raid

Community Spotlight takes a behind-the-scenes look at the at the contributions made by local communities and map editors on Waze. The community is made up of volunteers with a shared vision working together for the common good.

We’ve got to hand it to our budding South African community. A few months ago, they unlocked fuel prices by mapping over 80% of the country’s gas stations. Now, they have their sights set on mapping the entire country’s speed limits in order to gain access to the coveted feature. It’s not an easy task, but we think they’re up for the challenge.

To help map the speed limits, the community organized a Mega Map Raid that is taking place from April 30th until May 8th. Map Raids are time-limited hackathons that focus on improving a specific area of the map. While Map Raids are normally exclusive to local editors, Mega Map Raids are an international effort.

To help out-of-towners become familiar with mapping editing in South Africa, the community created this amazing Wiki page for the upcoming Map Raid. The country has been divided by province, and every editor has been assigned an area to work on.

The Wiki page also contains helpful tips about typical speed limits, road signs and mapping conventions unique to the country. Since this Map Raid is focussed on speed limits, there is also a section that deals with road signs that could be easily confused with speed limit signs.

The Map Raid has already begun, but it’s not too late to join the fun! If you’d like to contribute to the effort, you can do so by signing up here: http://bit.ly/MMR_SouthAfrica.

If you'd like to sign up for our next Indian Map Raid, you can do so here

Good luck South Africa! We’re confident that you’ll have speed limits unlocked soon!

Privacy and Waze

Today we received questions about a research report and subsequent news article which claimed that Wazer privacy could be compromised and users could be followed if a hacker exploited our network.

The Waze ecosystem is built upon trust and deep respect for all of you - real-time traffic simply doesn’t work without the participation of our community, and we are constantly reviewing and adding safeguards to protect our users. Please read further as we address a few severe misconceptions from related news coverage and explain how Waze thinks about privacy. User accounts were not compromised, there was no server breach and Wazer account data is safe.

First: a stranger cannot search for / find your Wazer on the map and follow you. Those adorable Wazers you see ‘driving’ past you on the map are minutes old, and a random snapshot of activity in the area, not an absolute illustration. So, why are they there? When Waze first entered new countries, marking community members on the map was a way to verify to newbies that the community was thriving locally and that traffic information was current. (Imagine logging into a social networking site and not seeing any other profiles...not a very compelling experience! Building a driving community works similarly.) Now, more than 50 million navigators receive comfort from those icons on the map, a reminder that we are all in this together and there are others ahead in your journey who may be able to help. In the event of an emergency like a snowstorm or evacuation, you also have the ability to message someone ahead to gather real-time information that could save your life.

The reporter in the article gave her location and username to the research team which greatly simplified the process of deducing sections of her route after the fact by using a system of ghost riders. We appreciate the researchers bringing this to our attention and have implemented safeguards in the past 24 hours to address the vulnerability and prevent ghost riders from affecting system behavior and performing similar tracking activities. None of these activities have occurred in real-time and in real-world environments, without knowing participants.

Waze regularly examines the security of our system and we expect to test and implement further security measures as any company does. Public discussion of the details of these safeguards is intentionally limited.

Wazers choose how much or how little information they give. You can always use invisible mode, meaning your icon will not show on the map. However by nature of being invisible you will appear as Offline to your friends, and you will not be able to send reports or add and edit places while using Waze. To turn on invisibility mode, go to Menu → My Waze (tap your name and icon) → Turn on “Go Invisible.” This setting resets after every use, because the majority of Wazers have joined Waze for the value of the community. They believe we are all in this together, and understand that the network works best when we each share a bit of our own information. For example, we added user phone number to the registration process when drivers told us they would rather share their location with those in their phone book than those in their Facebook network. By doing so, our users are now able to add ‘real world’ friends and share their routes in progress and estimated times of arrival, reducing distracted texting and calls behind the wheel.

More information on the use and storage of user data can be found in our privacy policy.

Nothing is more important than the relationships we’ve built with our drivers and we look forward to continuing to build our global community in open conversation with all of you.
