The DragonBox Pyra is now available for preorders

An open-sourced portable gaming PC

11

The DragonBox Pyra, a portable open-sourced mini-computer / gaming PC is now available for preorder. The modular device — that looks like an overweight Nintendo 3DS, with a QWERTY keyboard, and runs Debian Linux — has been in development since 2014 and comes with a pretty average, but interchangeable spec sheet:

  • 5-inch 720p resistive touchscreen
  • TI OMAP 5 dual-core ARM Cortex-A15 processor
  • 32GB of internal eMMC storage, two SDXC card slots, one internal microSDXC (can be used to increase storage)
  • HDMI video out, 2 USB 2 ports, 1 Micro USB 3.0, 1 Micro USB (charging), SIM-Card slot (on the LTE version)
  • 6,000mAh replaceable battery
  • Modular CPU-board (CPU, RAM and storage), mainboard (all ports, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi), and display-board

The modular options really make the Pyra an interesting device, especially if enough people buy it and updated parts are readily available over the coming years. The device will be able to run software like Firefox and LibreOffice, as well as Linux and console games (using an emulator). While there is no firm release date for the DragonBox Pyra as of yet, you can preorder it today starting at €500 ($575).
