Samsung could finally adopt USB-C with the Galaxy Note 6

Samsung is reportedly dropping microUSB in favor of USB Type-C on the upcoming Galaxy Note 6, according to SamMobile. The outlet is not sure, though, whether the phone will employ USB 3.1 (which supports HDMI on top of fast charging) or a less capable standard.

This could mean a couple of different things. One of the reasons Samsung gave for picking Micro USB over USB-C in its latest flagship phones — the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge — was that the company wanted to keep them compatible with the Gear VR headset. Adding USB-C would obviously break that compatibility, but if Samsung increases the size of the Note 6 screen to 5.8 inches that might not matter anyway. (The Note 5 has a 5.7-inch screen and is the biggest phone you can fit in the current Gear VR.)

Of course, it's possible that Samsung is working on a new version of the headset that uses USB-C. The company did confirm last week that it is working on a standalone VR headset, and it showed off VR-ready headphones at this year's SXSW, so it's clear that Samsung wants to build out a large virtual reality ecosystem. If a new Gear VR is in the works, the rumored specs of a 5.8-inch screen, 4,000mAh battery, and 6GB of RAM would make the Note 6 one hell of a mobile VR setup.
