Raspberry Pi's new camera board has an 8 megapixel sensor from 2014

Raspberry Pi's endearingly horrible 5 megapixel camera board accessory launched in 2013, was discontinued in 2014, and still haunts DIY projects to this day. Finally the Pi people are putting it out of its misery by offering a replacement: an 8 megapixel camera board, for the same $25 price. The new board is based on a Sony IMX219 sensor, which is still a potato, just a less egregious one.

Sony has an info page about the sensor from 2014, which includes videos of the camera shooting video at 180 frames per second, and doing a bit of HDR. This isn't going to make good pictures, but it's about as good as it gets for tinkerers who want actual control over a camera sensor at the hardware level.

The new camera comes in infrared and visible light versions, and is available now.
