Assistant Cybersecurity Editor

Summary

The Christian Science Monitor is looking for whip-smart, innovative, and motivated assistant editor to join its growing Passcode team.

Launched last February, Passcode is the Monitor's project dedicated to covering security and privacy in the Digital Age. We produce smart, innovative, and enterprise journalism that breaks news and explores topics that matter to anyone who cares about safely navigating our connected world. Roles and Responsibilities

As assistant editor, you'll generate story ideas, manage reporters and contributing writers, oversee our e-mail newsletter, participate in live events, assist with producing multimedia stories, and attend industry conferences. You'll also take a leading role in cultivating a special focus area for Passcode that'll explore how cybersecurity intersects with everyday life.

Regular Contacts: This person regularly interfaces with other editorial departments as well as the Special Topics team including product managers, sponsorships sales, and events staff.

Job Requirements

Experience

At least three years editing or reporting experience at a news outlet and a proven ability to turn out great copy that packs a punch. Experience leading teams or managing writers is preferred.

Special Skills and Knowledge

Our ideal candidate will have:

• An understanding of cybersecurity and digital privacy topics
• Be able to craft both the perfect, sharable tweet and a fluid, lively narrative story
• A track record of generating compelling story ideas
• The ability to quickly produce stories free of grammatical and factual errors
• An interest in working with a small team in which everyone pitches in wherever needed

Newspaper/website internships

The Christian Science Monitor is a 24/7 news website with a global readership. The Monitor also publishes a weekly news magazine, which includes both material unique to the print product and stories that also appear on the Monitor's website. The Monitor offers a highly selective internship program.

Interns have an opportunity for hands-on experience in a range of departments - the US and world news desks and various features areas. Activities may include writing short items for the paper or website, doing research, and assisting the photo and graphics departments. It may also include some everyday office-management tasks. At the discretion of the editors, interns can assist with editing and contacting correspondents and contributors, as well as reporting their own stories. Generally, the minimum time requirement for paid internships is 35 hours a week. Academic internships are more flexible and can be considered on a part-time basis.
