CDC Releases Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain
As part of the urgent response to the epidemic of overdose deaths, CDC issued new recommendations for prescribing opioid medications for chronic pain, excluding cancer, palliative, and end-of-life care.

Every day, 46 people die from an overdose of prescription painkillers in the U.S. Health care providers wrote 259 million prescriptions for opioid painkillers in 2012, enough for every American adult to have a bottle of pills, according to a new Vital Signs report.

Prescription Painkiller Epidemic Among Women
Women are dying from prescription painkiller overdoses at rates never seen before, according to a new CDC Vital Signs. While men are more likely to die of a prescription painkiller overdose, the percentage increase in deaths since 1999 was greater among women (400 percent in women compared to 265 percent in men).
