It's an exploit from a bug. I'm pretty sure Valve would agree this isn't intended functionality.

Is it? I mean they've launched like 29 successful falcon 9 rockets, it's not like the very first 4 attempts that almost bankrupt them. Failures are a problem but even a few more wouldn't kill the company outright.

WOL does not trigger windows updates and co, there are separate triggers for those. I have WOL enabled and after disabling a few other things (like my keyboard/mouse being able to wake the computer) it no longer wakes.

That's terrible advice - I use wake on lan frequently, and it should not be randomly turning on your PC (I have this issue every now and then but after changing a few things it disappeared).

should be crippling my phone

I'm guessing that was a typo. Also, you wouldn't make a very good CEO/exec. The idea is to generate as much profit as you can for the company, allowing customers to keep their phones for extended periods of time doesn't align to that goal, nor does providing software updates or keeping the headphone jack when you can sell wireless headphones.

They used to make light bulbs last longer than they do today, but they realised planned obsolescence was a good strategy for making money.

When that man was going to all of Ragnar's sons I kinda expected Floki to be in that scene too - we saw Bjorns reaction so it was a shame Floki's wasn't included...

Yes, because accubattery, an app that lists 2002 as 'sources' for its 80% claim, is absolutely true and are not trying to sell their product at all.

New Share Pane Shows Ads in Windows 10 Creators Update - Winaero by jed_gaming in Windows10

[–]thecodingdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People think, wrongly, that when you "buy" something you are allowed to dictate the terms. Microsoft offers the software as is, you can accept or reject that, and as they have demonstrated with the ads, forced updates and the windows 10 upgrade rollout, they don't care.

You want to know something else? Microsoft will still be around in a few years and shit all will stop them doing what they want. When you own the desktop OS market, you can do as you please.

New Share Pane Shows Ads in Windows 10 Creators Update - Winaero by jed_gaming in Windows10

[–]thecodingdude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar to Reddit, this is a product owned by Microsoft, if they want to show you ads they are free to do so. If you dislike it then you are free to explore other options. Or find the option to turn the setting off, or use an older version of Windows.

If Reddit wanted to show you an ad every page load that'd be annoying, but this is their website and they can do as they please, including editing users comments since they own the database.

New Phones with Old Android Versions: Why Security Patches & Feature Updates Lessen the Downsides. by RenegadeUK in Android

[–]thecodingdude 41 points42 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm concerned, a phone will have the same data as your computer, especially if you use chrome on Android for example. Therefore as a buyer I'm looking at whether the manufacturer offers monthly security updates and how they roll them out. Luckily the two smartphones I've owned have been Google devices which now get monthly updates.

Here is a rulebook I found:

The Point Penalty Schedule to be used for violations set forth above is as follows:
FIRST offence WARNING
SECOND offence POINT PENALTY
THIRD and each subsequent offence GAME PENALTY

However, after the third Code Violation, the ITF Supervisor shall determine whether
each subsequent offence shall constitute a default.

I'm not sure about other places but you are legally allowed to return something simply because you don't like it or want it. "I no longer want this, please can I have my money back?". As long as you return the items in good condition/packaging etc you're home free.

There's no such thing as a "no returns" since you always have your statutory rights.

Should i sell my phone? by KVPEK in Nexus6P

[–]thecodingdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except how widespread were the Note 7 issues? We live in a time where a single upvoted Reddit thread can over exaggerate an issue because "OMG 50k upboats", heck, even 2-3 reddit threads reaching /r/all makes it seem like the apocalypse is amongst us. All it takes is a few instances to blow up on social media and confirmation bias takes over at that point. Similar to this video by CGPGrey

RMA Nexus bought on Swappa by carlosabia in Nexus6P

No. I tried this and the support agent said that because they couldn't see the order on my account they were unable to process a RMA. You're SOL, unless you talk to Huawei which is pointless.

[–]thecodingdude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Samsung did it, Google can do it. They're choosing not to which is incredibly bad form. Even worse, they're refusing to say what the issue actually is and the new RMA devices may be ticking time bombs before it happens again.

My comment, which is still the top, in the stickied thread was true:

How utterly useless. I imagine for many this will not apply:

For any customers who purchased a Nexus 6P through the Google Store

Users who did not purchase the phone via Google are basically fucked. This is not the response any of us wanted.
