I'm losing my hearing. Most of what I hear is high-pitched ringing due to Tinnitus. I'm a big music fan, and I'll miss it dearly once I'm totally deaf. Indeed. The hack only works because the lang property is set on the html tag when using the subdomains and can be targeted with css. The point is to choose an unused 2-letter language code.

Someone did that a while back, getting two bots stuck in an endless loop. For the sanity of the mods, I suggest not doing it. (However in AskReddit we tend to not allow bots in the first place).

As far as I know you shouldn't need to add imports using the pylab environment (%pylab inline command or --pylab=inline flag), which imports everything into the global namespace. Not elegant, but good for quick and dirty matlab style coding.

To be fair, I probably would have felt the same way had I seen those first year projects before coming. I was a bit in awe of what the first years are doing nowadays, like that Raspberry PI assembly language chess, in my day the closest we got was matrix multiplication in x86 assembly.

But I wouldn't feel intimidated by that, firstly because the projects they show at the open day are obviously of a high standard, and some people put a ridiculous amount of time and effort into them, so it's not necessarily representative of the work you'd be expected to do, and secondly because they'll teach you all the stuff you need to know. I know people who had no experience with programming before coming here, and managed to ace all the labwork and projects.
