Doctors on social media and in real life should be educators not bullies. Anti-vaxxers are our patients too. Just because they’re deadly wrong it doesn’t mean we should dehumanize them and treat them as mortal enemies. We must reach out to them in kindness so they can change.

Vaccines don’t only prevent measles. They prevent chicken pox, rubella, the flu, mumps, polio, several types of HPV, tetanus, pertussis, and many other diseases that hurt us and our families. Let’s be fully informed about their benefits before being overrun by irrational fear.

We’re having many measles outbreaks in our country even though the CDC declared endemic measles eradicated in 2000. That’s because people who don’t vaccinate their children can travel abroad and bring it home. Pregnant women and the very immunocompromised cannot get the vaccine.

And what are the consequences of getting measles? It doesn’t always just cause a fever and a rash. In fact, it can spread to the brain causing painful seizures and attack the immune system leading to severe pneumonia and death. It killed 8 million kids every year before vaccines.

The facts alone are scary enough. Measles is so contagious that 90% of an infected person’s close contacts will get the disease if they aren’t vaccinated. If an infected person coughs in a room and leaves, an unvaccinated person can catch the disease up to two hours later.

Rather than directing outrage at the person, we must do things differently and direct outrage at the bad idea itself. Anti-vaxxers are very misguided people educated in the wrong way. But don’t give up on them. We must convince them of the truth with evidence and good education.

It’s shocking when a celebrity we admire supports a dangerous idea. But that’s why we don’t take health advice from movie stars. Jessica Biel is absolutely wrong about vaccines. Virtually all doctors and the entire medical community agree that vaccines are safe and save lives.

Not going to make fun of Howard Schultz for having back pain and surgery. Just hoping that as he takes privileged time off to rest and recuperate, he reflects on how siphoning votes as an Independent may end up breaking the backs of all Americans in desperate need of health care.

The American Medical Association doesn’t want the American people to enjoy the benefits of Medicare for All or any kind of single-payer healthcare system because money and profits are more important than living breathing human beings. What a stain on our oath to do no harm.
