I mean I can list the influences on the setting but they're actual places in western or central Pennsylvania.

Oddly enough we didn't have to go to David Lynch to find reference material for a small town. Crazy, I know.

NITW is not influenced by Twin Peaks at all. There's a small remote town in it b/c sometimes folks who have lived in those make games.

i've had a queasy tension headache on and off for like a week and a half and i have no idea what to do about it

If we didn't have The Fear, who would we be?

And it struck me how traumatic struggling is. We define ourselves by our relation to this fear. The Fear.

We talked about how weird it would be if we got to a place where we could lose The Fear. We'd have to totally redefine ourselves.

We know like... planning and paying bills and surviving and making things. Living with The Fear.

- "passion" and that assurance that we'll make it huge. The terms of success marked out in some blue sky somewhere.

Matt's like Bethany and I and a lot of my friends- we don't have that entrepreneurial language

He was asking me about the game, wondering what release was going to be like and assuring me it'll do well.

What's been interesting to me in games has been meeting people who never got The Fear. And yes, it's a thing you get through contact.

No matter how well he's doing, The Fear is there. Once it gets in, it never leaves.

And Matt was like "I can't really bring myself to just go a get a car. I have to make do with this one until it's not driveable anymore."

His old car is currently in the shop and it's a big hassle. His dad was laughing at him- "you're doing fine- get a new used car already!"

Matt's a bit older than me. He and his girlfriend of 5 years own half of a duplex in L-ville. He's pretty established. Doing well.

Or maybe like a big black dog or something.

The Fear is something I don't really have to explain. A lot of you know exactly what it is. This ghost always in the distance behind you.

Some evenings are really nice.

So the teacup glazes were more a private joke.

He's not nerdy in the identity sense that's now the mode. He just played dnd as a kid and the odd videogame from time to time now.

Matt's my professional friend from a time when we both worked at an ill-fated production company in 2009 doing mograph.

Maybe not mugs. Teacups.

He does pottery. He made us mugs. One has red glaze around the top, the other blue. "Health and Mana, get it?"

Leaning on my car and getting slightly rained on while he smoked, talking about this dumb election in our dumb country.
