Uber and tipping your driver

This is a subject I've been meaning to write a post on for some time. Every once in a while I talk to a friend who is convinced that they are tipping their driver through the Uber app. That they set it up way back when they set up their account.

Took me a while to find what they were talking about but I did and you're not tipping your Uber driver at all. You're tipping a Taxi driver, if you are using the app in an area where you can call a standard Taxi through the app. Like San Francisco or NYC.

Should you tip your Uber driver? That's your call but if you feel it's necessary to tip a Taxi driver when using the app but not a regular Uber driver, I'd say you need to re-evaluate exactly why you feel the need to tip a Taxi?! I personally would only tip the Uber driver if they did something very much over and above getting me to my destination. I tip when I use a Taxi because I'm intimidated into doing it. I NEVER use a Taxi if it can be avoided these days.

This has been an issue for some time. People want the cheaper Uber Pool ride but they still take their own sweet time getting to the car. That's inconsiderate to your driver AND the other person riding in the Pool.

This starts today. From Uber to us drivers:
Starting today, when you arrive at an uberPOOL rider’s pickup location, you will see a timer in your app that will count down from 2 minutes. This is to help you track the 2 minute wait time for POOL pickups.

If a rider arrives before the 2 minute wait time is up, you can begin the trip and be on your way. If the rider does not arrive within 2 minutes, the timer will run out and prompt you to cancel and receive the $5 no-show fee.

So if you don't want to find yourself standing on the curb with no ride, don't call for an Uber till you are ready to leave!

Uber parking lot patrol robot is cheaper than a security guard

Uber drivers at the company’s inspection lot near Mission Bay in San Francisco will be met with a rather strange sight: a five-foot-tall, white, egg-shaped robot wheeling around the lot, on the look-out for trouble. This robot will be putting a few people out of a job soon

The robot is a K5, a 300-pound security robot made by Silicon Valley start-up Knightscope. It’s a stand-in for a human security guard. Stacy Stephens, Knightscope’s VP of marketing, says Uber is a recent customer of the company. The bot was spotted by friend of Fusion, Alan Sanchez, who stopped to take a photo of the bot and found that when he did, the robot stopped moving around to focus its stare on him:

Didi Chuxing to acquire UberChina

Didi Chuxing today announced a strategic agreement with Uber under which Didi Chuxing will acquire all assets of UberChina--including its brand,business operations and data--for operation within mainland China. This landmark transaction signals a new stage in the development of China’s rideshare industry.
In exchange for the UberChina assets, Uber will receive 5.89% of the combined company with preferred equityinterest which is equal to a 17.7% economic interest in Didi Chuxing. In addition, Baidu and other Chinese shareholders will receive a 2.3% economic interest in Didi Chuxing. Under the agreement, Didi Chuxing will also obtain a minority equity interest in Uber.Cheng Wei, founder and chairman of Didi Chuxing, will join the board of Uber.Travis Kalanick, founder of Uber, will join the board of Didi Chuxing. Additional terms were not disclosed. With this transaction, Didi Chuxing becomes the only company with common investment from Tencent, Alibaba and Baidu.
