Ardnamurchan Lighthouse 2

Ardnamurchan is the most westerly point in mainland Scotland. It looks out across the Atlantic to the west to the Isles of Coll, Barra and Uist and north to the Isles of Muck, Eigg and Rum.

This photograph needed a bit of climbing and scrambling to get, but then that's what I enjoy. I hope you do too.

In addition to the iconic Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh is home to some of Europe’s most culturally significant festivals. The Edinburgh International Festival runs through August, showcasing opera, dance, theatre and classical music. Arguably more famous is the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which also runs in August. Here just about anything goes, from comedy and theatre, to burlesque, mime, and puppetry. Fans of history and tradition may be tempted by the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, an extravagant series of military parades and concerts which takes place at Edinburgh Castle, also in August.

Hogmany, the Scottish new year’s celebrations, kick off in Edinburgh, with street parties all over the city. Visitors to Edinburgh should check out the Old and New Towns, both listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and together comprising the centre of Edinburgh. The Old Town is the medieval heart of the city, running from the castle down the Royal Mile, and containing some of the oldest buildings in the city. It is also an area that comes alive at night, with many of the vaults converted into bars and clubs. The New Town is Georgian, from the late 18th century, and is comprised of elegant squares and grand neo-classical architecture. This area also contains some of Edinburgh’s best shopping.
