Australia and New Zealand are widely known as sports-mad nations, so it shouldn’t come as any great surprise that the number of people actively participating in organised sports and physical activities is on the rise.

Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows an estimated 4.7 million people took part in some form of sporting or physical activity in 2013–14. In New Zealand 74 per cent of adults, or 2.5 million people, took part in sport and recreation during any given week in 2013–14. That’s great in terms of fitness, but alarm bells are beginning to sound because of the rising levels of insurance claims and payouts associated with sports-related injuries.

The UK launches Flood Re today, a new scheme to offer affordable cover to homes in high risk flood areas. It is being pad mainly by a flood levy on all home insurance policyholders and in response to insurers refusing to provide universal flood cover. It has not been without controversy, with flats and shops being excluded, while riverfront mansions remain eligible.
