Ask your Google Assistant on Google Home/Mini/Max to play your favorite shows on HBO NOW, CBS All Access, The CW

HBO Now and CBS All Access have both landed on Google Home in the past couple of months, adding to the already available Netflix support. Both of those require that you manually link your accounts to get things working, but The CW doesn’t require an account at all.

To cast content from The CW, simply ask Assistant on your phone or Google Home to play a specific show from the network. That might include “Arrow,” “The Flash,” or others like “Riverdale.”

Play some of your favorite shows and movies from subscription services like HBO NOW, CBS All Access and The CW. You can also cast from eligible Android phones and iPhones. Just start by saying, “Ok Google” or “Hey Google”:

- "Watch Curb Your Enthusiasm"
- “Play Star Trek: Discovery”
- “Turn the volume down”
- “Go back 30 seconds”
- “Play Riverdale”

So the next time your hands are full with popcorn, go ahead and forget the remote. Just say, “Hey Google,” sit back and enjoy.

Google Lens was announced at Google I/O 2017 as a tool that would allow you receive contextual information about visual objects and images. Since then, Google Lens has made an appearance in the Google Photos app on Pixel and Pixel 2. Now, after promising that Google Lens would eventually become accessible through the Google Assistant, Google is rolling out the visual search product to the Assistant.

According to multiple reports, some users are beginning to see a new Google Lens button in the bottom right corner of the Google Assistant screen. Tapping on the icon will open the camera app, which you can then point at an object and tap on the object in the viewfinder to perform a search. Google Lens through the Google Assistant works very similarly to Google Lens in the Google Photos app, except you don't have to take the picture beforehand.

Keep in mind, this feature is currently exclusive to Pixel and Pixel 2 smartphones. However, if you have one of those devices, open the Google Assistant and see if Lens has made its way to your device!

The Google Assistant is probably the best personal assistant available and it was improved on Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, allowing you to do things like change settings or initiate a conversation with Google support. Now, an Android Police reader has discovered a new and somewhat cool feature that the Assistant has learned.

According to the tipster, who has a Pixel 2 XL running the latest Android 8.1 Oreo Developer Preview, the Google Assistant was able to start a troubleshooting process once the tipster asked why his phone wasn't charging. Android Police founder, Artem Russakovskii, was able to reproduce the feature. Essentially, the Assistant was able to run a battery health check and look for any apps that may be causing a drainage issue. Once the Assistant exhausted all of its troubleshooting options, it then offered to contact Google support through phone or chat. Unfortunately, it is still a little buggy. When given the option to contact Google support through phone or chat and you actually select an option, the Assistant replies back "Sorry, I don't understand."

Still, it's pretty cool the Assistant has learned some troubleshooting features as it could come in pretty handy. Android Police also states that the Assistant can run a diagnostic on the camera and Bluetooth connectivity! Keep in mind, the feature may be exclusive to Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, as it did not work on the original Pixel or other Android devices. It also appears that Google is still testing out the feature.

Google Assistant can recognize music and ID that song for you

Next time you hear a nice tune playing, you can simply ask Assistant "What's playing right now?" and it will reply with the title and artist.

If Google Assistant has voice set as the “Prefered input” method and you’re in a loud environment, you will see a new “What’s this song?” chip as the first suggestion in the carousel. Meanwhile, users can also ask “What song is this?” and other similar commands to have Assistant start listening for a song. There is a cool waveform pattern, with a song card with the title, artist and short excerpt of the lyrics showing up after the tune is recognized. The info card also contains links to YouTube, Google Play Music, Spotify, and a link to search for the song on Google. Google's software has been able to identify music for a while, although this rollout will see it become more pervasive across devices.

The "What's this song?" chip should appear automatically if your device notices music playing in the background when you trigger Google's Assistant, though you can also manually ask it to identify music. Sound Search should appear in all countries that have the Assistant set up in one of the four eligible languages English, French, German, or Japanese.
