I'm just going to say it. Uber (and to a lesser extent Lyft) has ruined Manhattan. Traveling less than a mile in midtown now takes 30 min by car. This is the result of no long term planning. Also result of protecting the status quo (medallion system) for too many years.

It's hard not to look at the growth and acceptance of isolationism and populism in the West, the consolidation of power underway in China and Russia, the rise of powerful new technologies, and certain language used by POTUS not see plausible catastrophic scenarios on the horizon

Spent time at the WWII Museum in New Orleans, and I was struck by this sign. As a futurist, my job is to continually listen for weak signals and to map scenarios. (1/2)

Systemic change requires thinking exponentially while acting incrementally, and it requires assuming some risk. This is not how news orgs operate. (Nor how most industries operate, to be fair.) Which is why I'm supportive of these very nascent DLT/ blockchain efforts.

Agree. The real problem is that the market doesn't reward media companies for R&D that might take years (a few, several) to pay off. The private sector likely can't produce the research that leads to radically different business models on its own.

Summary: The Civil token sale may have been an initial disappointment, for reasons that were both controllable and uncontrollable. This does not mean that tokens won't work, that the idea is bad, or that DLT doesn't make sense for journalism. The ecosystem needs time to mature.

Keefe wrote a really terrific post on what it was like trying to buy tokens. I thought this was terrific: (Again, that's v1.)

I wouldn't count Civil out. They still need some time.

Also keep in mind that this is a first attempt. Usually v1 of a new tech idea takes a lot to get off the ground. (Friendster v1, Myspace v2, Facebook v3 finally hits.)

4. The reason for investing in tokens wasn't explained well by Civil 5. The use cases for tokens within the Civil network wasn't explained well 6. Serious lack of marketing (which needed to include all that explanation) 7. It's early, and the tech is still maturing

Here's where I think things went wrong for them... 1. Very few people understand what tokens are 2. The process for buying tokens is convoluted for the average journalist 3. Even tech-savvy jurnos like tried to buy tokens and complained (rightly) about the process

SFO > BWI with Michael Lewis's new book The Fifth Risk. He's among my very favorite authors, and this book does not disappoint. (Yes, I'm a futurist who still reads books on paper. Can't stand e-reading.)
