Breaking: Following a decision in our Group meeting, we will support . However, we will be vigilant to ensure that she delivers on the progressive commitments she has made as a result of our pressure.

I admire von der Leyen's Europeanism but this constant touting of her father's Commission career and her Brussels youth feels unnecessary and rather too much like dynastic politics. Her record and proposals are what matter, not her family background.

Not just any MEP: of Germany's satirical DIE PARTEI, making a sartorial comment about von der Leyen's contentious allocation of major contracts to consultancies as German defence minister.

The "conference" could happen anyway. The Q is what results it would bring - if Treaty change then you need 28 Member States to back it. Rebooted Spitz - could probably do politically. But needs national parties to agree. EP init - needs treaty change, so MS to agree.

11/11 Overall von der Leyen's speech was a somewhat formless but competent & serious pitch aimed particularly at centre-left sceptics. Hers would be a safe-pair-of-hands Commission presidency - Continuity Juncker on internal matters with perhaps greater foreign-policy emphasis.

10/ L'Europe qui protège (the protective Europe) very much the dominant idea in European politics today. To extent that von der Leyen's speech had a theme, this was it: the need to shield European citizens from negative effects of turbulent change.

9/ Strong emphasis on gender equality. UvdL praised Simone Veil, pledged gender equal Commission & further moves to combat violence against women. Daring MEPs (especially sceptical socialists) to vote down first woman president of the Commission...

8/ A "Nixon goes to China" moment on EU democracy? UvdL seemingly v conscious of charge that hers was a "back room" nomination & proposes conference on future of Europe (multinational lists on agenda?), rebooted Spitzenkandidat process, right of initiative for EP.

7/ Prominence of environmental priorities, eg emissions targets and Green Deal. Not enough for Green MEPs but illustrative of how deep into the mainstream the fight against climate change has penetrated in the era of Fridays for Future, surging Green parties etc.

6/ Brits should not expect any shift in Commission attitude to Brexit under von der Leyen. For all the speculation in UK press about her supposed Anglophile or EU federalist inclinations the section on Brexit was totally unremarkable boilerplate. Continuity Juncker.

5/ Indeed von der Leyen was most confident and authoritative on foreign and security themes. Her call for more QMV on foreign policy is welcome (see my recent col: ). Strong sense she'd be more outward focused than previous Commission presidents.

4/ Strongest part of speech: migration/EU in the world. UvdL combined the local & the global by juxtaposing her experience of taking in a refugee (now well integrated) with experience of former Iraqi president Barzani pressing need for "more Europe" on her as a defence minister.

3/ Ursula von der Leyen keen to fend off claim that she's the candidate of Orbán, PiS etc: "There can be no compromise with the rule of law." Promises additional EU wide rule of law instrument - an idea with roots in the EPP's much-too-slow recognition that this was an issue.

2/ Socialists, sceptical of UvdL, are the crucial swing constituency in today's vote & might remain so under her commission. She acknowledged this with overtures on fair taxes, unemployment reinsurance, minimum wage & focus on her progressive record as German families minister.

1/ Bit of a list. Lots of broadly sensible policies, most of which have been in the mainstream euro-ether for a while. A decent "vive l'Europe" peroration but I missed a big, clear overarching account of where Europe is and where it should go.
