Signal (formerly TextSecure and RedPhone) can actually be run without Google via F-Droid! I had to jump to lots of hoops, but it turns out to work. Looks like a simpler approach based on WebSocket instead of Googles service is in sight.

Another GNU question
2016-04-17T11:04:23Z via Pumpa To: Public CC: Followers
What is the difference between GNU and a distribution like Debian or Ubuntu?
Show all 7 replies
Distributions also package software that is not part of the GNU project or the Linux kernel.
That is what I don't get. In case of Ubuntu for example I would get packages that are not part of the GNU project, but they are part of my operating system. Or am I expected to say that non-GNU packages don't qualify as part of my OS because they are not GNU? Maybe I don't understand how essential the GNU project is for all of those Distributions. Android seems to just stick with The Linux kernel obviously without much GNU-ification around it.
A distribution is much more than an OS.
I mean, the Debian repositories include software such as games, video editors, chat clients... those aren't part of an OS, they're just general applications.
Besides that, the GNU project was started to create a free OS. People are free to build OSes based on it, but mixed with whatever else they want (license-permitting, of course).

Repositories don't count as OS of course. But what about non-GNU packages that get installed from them? A non-GNU display driver may not be GNU - but it still is part of my OS. It operates my monitor input in that case.

The GNU project is usually fairly essential because of core libraries. Also, if there is no package and a user needs to build software in order to install it, then that requires more GNU software. Android has no GNU software. GNU also encourages program modification by all computer users, and GNU software like Emacs and Guix use configuration files that teach Lisp.

GNU question

Is every software under a version of the GPL automatically part of the GNU project?

Probably via http://www.gnu.org/help/evaluation.html.

@[email protected] No, this is much more complicated. GNU is not a bunch of GPL software. Free software licenses and the GNU project are different things. Visit gnu.org again for a complete explanation. -

GUIX question: what does a repo look like in GUIX, would that work the same as with debian?
Would the Gnome Software Center be usable with it?
Show all 5 replies
As for Gnome Software Center, I think there's a strong possibility a bridge between the two could be put in place (and some Gnome people I've talked to seem to think so). But I've never hacked on that stuff so I dont' know!
I'm just an ordinary user and curious about how my life would be concerning adding new software.
How comfotable/complicated is it to do manually install stuff? Can GUIX make use of upstream GUI tools? Is the idea to end up with one big repo or thousands of small ones?
The typical method is to list your 3rd party repo in the environment variable GUIX_PACKAGE_PATH [0].
For example, I have a few private packages that I keep under ~/pkgs. This directory is named in GUIX_PACKAGE_PATH, so all the Guix tools take it into account. Once the variable is set, operation is seamless.
But, if the new software is free software, why not try to get the package into the GNU Guix "official" repository?

They should update it to say that *all* browsers have a bad experience… given that a collaborative creativity platform that refuses to use Creative Commons and instead makes it so that this proprietary company is the only entity with full rights to the combined works that users make — that's a bad experience.

Things are happening for sure. Last week I was in San Francisco for the Social WG face to face meeting. It was the most successful meetings we've had so far in the group. I'm really optimistic.
More should be said, I should probably write up a post.
Jessica is anticipating server to server federation basics landing in mediagoblin probably by end of january.
Things are very actively happening, though I think we're doing a bad job of communicating it. I hope to make a blogpost this week giving an update.
