• January 1 – present – The 2017–18 North American cold wave takes place, with record low temperatures gripping the Central and Eastern United States.
• January 1 – January 3 – Violent protests against the government and supreme leader Ali Khamenei continue across Iran, resulting in 22 deaths and over 550 arrests. Head of the IRGC Mohammad Ali Jafari announces an end of "the sedition" on January 3, with several pro-government rallies held in different cities, condemning the violence.
• January 3 – Computer analysts report two major security vulnerabilities, named "Meltdown" and "Spectre," affecting the microprocessors of almost all computers in the world.
