The Department of History and Civilization (HEC) focuses on global, comparative, and transnational approaches to the history of Europe in the World since 1400. We seek to encourage critical reflection on the research, writing, teaching, and dissemination of history across national borders, and to relate historical research to contemporary challenges. The rich variety of historical approaches and research themes, as well as the very diverse backgrounds of professors, makes for a vibrant and international academic community, and it enables the Department to recruit high-quality Ph.D. candidates and host outstanding research fellows.
