I am planning on playing with 2 classically trained musicians, 1 cellist and 1 viola player. If I am playing the chord of Cmajor with a capo on the 5th fret (which is an F on an open fretboard) am I playing in the key of F or, as has been mentioned might be the case, am I in the key of A playing an F ?

You are not in any key! You're simply playing a concert F major chord. I think the confusion may be because you're barring or capoing on the fifth fret, where A major lives. But - that A can only be A when you play an open E shape with the capo on 5. It's like saying if you play open chords at the nut end you must be in E. Of course that's not true either! |
