Exploring Space with Google

In partnership with NASA, and PBS, YouTube and Google Moderator will pose your questions to the crew of STS-134, the final mission of the space Shuttle Endeavour, in a live interview emceed by stellar talent (another space joke!) Miles O'Brien.

To mark the occasion, we put together this video to celebrate our love for space, told with the help of products we pour our hearts into every day. You’ll see everything from historical sky maps featured in Google Earth, to 3D buildings at Kennedy Space Center, and our salute to both the astounding achievement of the Apollo era and the Google Lunar X PRIZE, a new space race of entrepreneurial leadership.

Pin your love on the map

This Valentine’s Day, tell your friends, family or significant other that you love them with a fun message from Google Maps.

Location can be a powerful trigger of memories—from the Italian place in San Francisco where you went on your first date to the cabin you rented at Lake Tahoe with your roommates. For that reason, we thought it would be great to create a Valentine’s Day card that’s tied to a specific location. As long as there’s a place that means something special to you and the ones you love, mapping your valentine is a great way to make Valentine’s Day a little more special.

One of my favorite memories is from a family trip we took to Eilat in Israel (check out my awesome fashion sense, I’m on the far left...), so I sent my parents this card:

Chrome and browser speed tests: Potato gun, lightning, and sonic magic

This past week, we released a new beta version of our web browser, Google Chrome. This beta release includes one of our biggest speed improvements to date and a handful of nifty new features. All the goodness of the new Chrome beta will be made more widely available to all Chrome users when we release it in Chrome's stable channel in the coming weeks – so stay tuned to the Google Chrome blog for these updates!
In the meantime, with this beta's crazy performance improvements, we designed a series of unconventional speed tests for the browser:

Happy Earth Day!

Today marks one of our favorite holidays, Earth Day, which is a day designed to inspire appreciation and awareness for the environment. If you haven't seen it yet, check out today's doodle in honor of the special day.

1. Bike, walk, carpool, or use public transportation whenever possible.2. Take stairs instead of the elevator.3. Conserve energy by turning off lights and unplugging electronics when not in use.4. Instead of printing, use Google Docs and go paperless!5. Bring reusable bags when shopping.6. Use non-toxic cleaning alternatives.7. Opt for local produce.8. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs.9. Only run the dishwasher or washing machine when you have a full load.10. Try composting your food waste and kitchen scraps.

Search Stories 101

Back in February we ran our "Parisian Love" ad during the Super Bowl – created from a few Google searches and a little music. We heard from many people that it would be great if there was a way that anyone could tell their own story and share it with the world.
So today, we're happy to release the Search Stories Video Creator tool that allows you to quickly and easily create your own search story. Give the number of adventures that students have to tell stories about, we think you'll have some winners to share. We've been excited to see some of the ones that have already come in from students, like this one:

So whether it's feeling the need for speed in Arizona, building a bridge in Guatemala, or going on a date with a vampire, give it a try and share your search story with the world!

Shooting for three: Keeping up with the Madness

My favorite time of year – March Madness – is here again! And to keep up with the action this year, some of my fellow basketball fans here at Google and I have teamed up to create a page where you can use Google tools to help you track your favorite teams. At google.com/collegebasketball2010 you’ll find:

An iGoogle gadget to give you up-to-date information on schedules and scores
A Google docs tournament bracket template to help you create and manage your bracket in an online spreadsheet
Live scores by searching for your favorite teams
Real time search results for the latest news and chatter about the tournament

I've also made my third consecutive journey into mapping the NCAA College Basketball tournament, so check out this map, which shows you all the major locations for the tournament:

There's also the Google Earth KMZ file that includes the home arenas and 14 tournament venues. You can even take a tour of the 14 arenas in the “3D Buildings” layer in Google Earth by watching the video below (or you can download this kml tour and open it in Google Earth 5.)

Have you been too busy hitting the books to keep up with the Games in Vancouver or don't know where to look? Well, you're in luck because we've compiled a list of great tools for you the explore the Games with Google.
Check out google.com/games10 for all the latest information about the Games, available in 40 languages. This is our one-stop shop for all things Games related, including up-to-date medal counts, news, event resultsm and event schedules with rich visuals from Vancouver in 3D, Streetview and more. Trust me, the Maps gadget alone is worth the visit. (It's amazing- Click on "venues," select a venue, and then click see it in 3D. Then click on any of the other venues and you'll fly right over to it. Definitely one of the cooler gadget I've seen in a while.)

Street View trike competition university finalists

Last month we asked you to nominate your campus to be photographed for Street View on Google Maps. We were inundated with more than 25,000 suggestions across all categories, and university campuses made up 44% of all suggestions!
We've narrowed the top suggested locations to a few finalists and there is now just one week left in the voting period. Cast your vote for your favorite place within each category to tell us which locations you'd most like to see on Google Maps. The university finalists are:

Arizona State University
Michigan State University
Princeton University
Rochester Institute of Technology
Stanford University

Visit www.google.com/trike to vote and see the other finalists! You can vote as many times as you like until the deadline at 11:59pm PST on Monday, November 30th. We'll then work on getting all the winners into Google Maps, and of course we'll work closely with the relevant organizations to collect images of any privately-owned locations.

Flying (and landing) in a WiFi Wonderland

Yesterday we announced an expansion of our Virgin America WiFi sponsorship to also include 47 airports. Both programs will offer free WiFi through January 15, 2010 and will cover more than 10 million passengers traveling this holiday season. There's no Google account or credit card required to log on, but we'll be offering the option to try out a Google product and also offer the chance to donate to one of three charities; we'll be matching donations up to $250,000.

We hope that this makes travel to be with friends and family that much better this holiday season.
