Yummy Lummy the food blog if you work full-time and live alone?
Food blogBali bombingsFacebook GroupExtra information
Yummy Lummy is about cooking meals for one. I want to inspire you to cook simple meals with flavour and fun. While I’m not about to guarantee these are ‘quick and easy’ recipes, most of them don’t take a huge amount of effort. I started Yummy Lummy to help me help you. People working full-time and living alone.
Some of the recipes use equipment like a precision cooker and a water bath. These recipes can be made without the special equipment, but to do it with a large saucepan and thermometer does require you to monitor the water temperature pretty closely throughout the cook.
The other special equipment I often use includes a slow cooker and a pressure cooker. You can slow cook in an oven, but again, you need to monitor the temperature carefully.
Some of us think about food all the time, other’s not so much. Lately, the recipes have been weekend creations with a smattering of weekday meals.
Yummy Lummy is a food blog which also tells a story about my relationship with food. I know that sounds corny and it’s become cliché after so many reality TV cooking shows. I’ll do my best not to use the word ‘journey’ or ‘hero’.
Sometimes I cook more than one person can eat (or more correctly, should eat). That’s what leftovers are for. Especially if you can use it the next day for lunch at work. Feel free to send me cooking ideas via the contact page
As I get older

My history of cooking and eating food has had its ups and downs. As an adult, my weight has fluctuated as high as 100 kg and as low as 72 kg. As I get older I’m learning more about food and more about me in terms of health and happiness. The blog includes recipes, some restaurant reviews (I’m sorry these are on the decline) and my fondness for photographing my meals. Feel free to send me food photography advice via the contact page. I also do other stuff.
Most of the cooking recipes are designed, to be meals for one (plus leftovers for reheating and enjoying later). If you live alone and work full-time, I hope this blog meets your needs.
What about frugal living needs?
Yummy Lummy isn’t about frugal cooking and living. That said, I’m conscious that many readers will be retired and/or have limited means. If you feel my recipes are too extravagant, please leave feedback in the comments and I hope I can provide thriftier solutions.
Something new
I’ve created a Facebook group called Cooking meals for one. You’re all welcome to join. I’ve decided to make it a closed group because of some trolling behaviour. Click on the link and I’ll see your request to join. If you want to ‘friend‘ me on Facebook please do so and I can add you to the group that way too. The aim is to get people to share ideas, recipes, blog posts and thoughts on living alone and cooking meals for one.
The rules are simple. No spam, unless it’s the compressed shoulder pork and other pork products from a tin that is popular in Hawaii. I don’t mind links to blog posts. Photographs of food and videos of cooking are encouraged. Sharing recipes and tips is very encouraged. If I get a sense there is conflict or trouble I will act to resolve the problem.
Podcast
I’ve really been missing podcasting. I used to have another show but decided to stop that and focus on food blogging. I’ve done some short sharp shows which I’ve called the Random Yummy. So far, I’ve dropped three shows. Please check them out and let me know what you think.
Trolling behaviour
Have you ever experienced the behaviour of online trolls? It can get very nasty and is effectively bullying behaviour. Unfortunately, it’s becoming prevalent. There is an element of gang mentally to it. What I’ve witnessed first hand has been people joining closed Facebook groups with an agenda to create disruption. People start name calling and then it can get nastier with calls for more vile and violent behaviour.
If you’re ever subjected to it, it can be very confronting. A strong constitution is necessary to act and put it in the past. Life is too short to spend any time on people whose self-respect is so low that they have to attack others.
My interest in photography
I’ve regained an interest in photography as a hobby. I started photography as a high school student when I built a biology laboratory under my parent’s house and I used to dissect animals and look at tissue and bacteria under the microscope. I shot an old Olympus OM-1 through the microscope eyepiece.
When I moved to Darwin, I used to photograph clinical diabetic lower limb lesions as a member of the diabetic foot team at the Royal Darwin Hospital. For that, I used a Nikon F90.
Now my photography interests have encompassed more than the scientific interests I have.

Enjoyed reading it whole!!
Thank you
Loved your site and observations (mind you for a keto blogger like myself was a bit hard looking at that yummy food) nice to see another Queenslander in this blogger world …everyone seems to live everywhere else 🙂
Dear Rosemary, thank you for visiting and for your kind comments. It’s good to know there are Queenslanders around 😃
Even though I live in Canberra, as I tell my friends who never understand my jokes or why I say things the way I do, I am and always will be a Queenslander.
Hey,
Your site is so much informative , I love to read your posts.
Thank you Andrina
Interesting! I enjoyed reading your post. Thanks 🙏
Hi Sharon,
Thanks. I’m sorry it took so long to reply to your comment. It got caught in spam.
Thanks for visiting my food blog.

Thank you very much 🙂
Bah! I never get trolls. I welcome them… at least sometimes to play with. But I get that they can be energy sapping and irritating when all you want is good convo.
I just read your response to the bloggess about Black Mirror. I too watched the Star Trek episode first. Then I watched the first episode of season 1. I almost stopped watching. Had I watched Season 1 first, I probably would not have watched any more. Be warned. S1E1 is VERY disturbing.
Thanks Rick. I’ll bear that in mind. Grateful for your advice.
Even if you don’t live alone, it’s much easier to double up a recipe than divide it. I often make two meals anyway for my husband and I as we don’t like the same stuff, so this is useful for all of us!
Thanks, Emma, that’s very true. Thanks for visiting my About page and commenting 😃
Hey Uncle Gary,
I read your blog and it is really neat.
Thank you very much George
I really enjoy your posts Gary but having difficulty sending a comment on any of them. Have comments twice on your Otis Dining Hall meal and also on your sports post but then it disappears so just trying this via my iPhone.
Hi Sue,
I can’t check my spam folder from my iPhone (well at least I don’t think I can). I’ve just gone into the back end of my dashboard, and guess what? Your comments are in spam and for the life of me, I don’t know why. Your comments never contain trigger words for my blacklist so it’s a mystery.
Thanks for letting me know Gary. At least I know they arrive. There is another blogger that happens too also ie goes into his spam. No idea why.
I now need to be more diligent about checking spam.
Hi Dr Lum! I was one of your medical students in Darwin. I still remember your story about being the first therapeutic p**p donor in Australia 🙂 I’m happy to have found your blog!
Hello Grace
Nice to hear from you

I’ll tell you something! I stated living alone 7 years ago. Clueless about cooking, I initially settled on Maggi. The maggi survival went on for a while, until I could have it no more.
Then one fine day, I gathered the strength to pick up my armour (apron) and went to the kitchen.
There was no looking back 🙂
Noodles have saved many a single person 😃
I love food, people, traveling and
thank you for sharing valuable
information here.
Baaaaaah. Have you ever eaten that?
Yes, I’ve eaten goat a few times. I like it slow cooked so the neat falls apart. It’s nice in a curry.
Continued from Sarah Ferguson’s blog! I had a pulled pork sandwich from their piggy a few days ago. This weekend they are going to roast a goat 🙃
Mmm… Goat 😋😋😋
I love Brussels sprouts. You have a very nice blog and I love the concept. Warm greetings from Montreal, Canada. 🙂
Thank you very much Linda. I’ve never been to Montreal. I’ve only visited Ottawa and Winnipeg so far in my visits to Canada. It is still cool in Canberra.
Thank you for sharing. I don’t like to cook but I do have sporadic moments of fun in the kitchen. Making gumbo Friday. 🙂
Mmm…Gumbo. It’s not a common dish here in Australia. I’ve never made it but I’ve eaten it a few times when I’ve been overseas.
loving the new logo – eating machine! Too cool 🙂
Thank you very much 😃
I discovered as a young man that I had a real problem with food. There is almost nothing I don’t like. Get it on the plate I will eat it. I also hate to throw anything away.
I can relate to that
I am puzzled??…My grand daughter Astoria asks for Yummy Lummy for her 11th birthday tomorrow. I am Australian but live in Florida, just finding out about all this, do you have any books published. Not sure where to go with this. Thanks
Sorry, I’ve not written any books. I’m not sure what your granddaughter is describing.
I have nominated you for a Liebster Award. Check out my last post to know more about this.

Thank you very much Silvia. Much appreciated.
I was a professional chef for too many years
I love to cook
See you on the other side of creativity
When I told my grade 6 teacher I wanted to be a chef he laughed at me. My grade 3 teacher told my parents I should leave school after grade 10 because I’d be better off attending a trade school given my poor grades. In retrospect I should have taken the advice become a chef and travelled the world.
Jennifer said to come and visit
See you on the other side of creativity
Sheldon
Hi Sheldon, thanks for coming over and visiting Yummy Lummy 😃
Hi, I found your site on Michael Origin’s site 🙂 Very interesting to read a food blog by a pathologist! I am in my last year of medschool now and can’t wait to be finished 🙂
Looking forward to your posts!
Have a great day,
Deniza
Thank you very much. I hope you enjoy the end of medical school. Once you finish life gets so much better and much more interesting.
Hi Gary,
I was recently challenged to participate in a three-day quote challenge and wanted to nominate you to participate as well! I’d definitely be interested to see which quotes you find most meaningful! All the best!

Hi Daniel
Thanks. I’ll try to get to this when I can.
I’m grateful that you thought of me for this 😃
Seafood and sweets. Oh yeah, you have my attention! 🍓
Thanks Gail. I adore seafood. It’s hard to beat. I’m also a sucker for sweets. I loved the colours of these ones.
I’ve nominated you for an award: https://amommasview.wordpress.com/2015/06/18/the-versatile-blogger-award-2/
Cool. Thank you very much Momma 😀 I look forward to sharing the love.
Those brussel sprouts look so gooood!!! Thank you.
Thank you very much
Oh myyy Gary…
Those brussel sprouts look so gooood!!!
Thank you Clarissa. They were very tasty and so easy to cook 😀
Ok so when I start my world tour, I’m coming to visit you in Australia. We are going to cook up a storm, and we will watch a True Blood / Walking Dead Marathon. That is all. 🙂
Excellent 🙂
I love your Queensland Maroons kit!!!! Had to look up to see what a canetoad was. Good grief – those things can get to be 4 lbs and live 15 years!!!! I’m not familiar with Aussie Rugby so I learned a few things; old dog – new tricks. Great food blog!
and if you lick the poison glands you can get a big high (apparently) 🙂
