Can you hear me?

img_5431

Since my sojourn in Alaska this last almost-a-year, I’ve spent hundreds of dollars on my Oregon trac phone. It finally came down to needing to get a phone where Alaskan peoples could contact me without me worrying about the minutes I was using. I have enjoyed being able to talk to doctors, mom’s friends, and relations while not cringing at the loss of minutes. Texting is also 100% easier. However, the absolute oddest thing has happened with it.

I totally understand getting pocket calls or calls from a wrong number. However, I have only once gotten a call from someone who left a message for someone else. This is very strange as my voicemail message is not entirely ordinary and completely shouts ‘KRIS’. So when I went thru my messages last night and found a call from a girl with tears in her voice looking for a sister, I called the number back. This time, the male at the end of the message answered the phone (very much sounded like the same person at the end of the message) and asked a female person (her voice sounded familiar, too) if she had called a Kris. Needless to say, I sent up a prayer for the girl and saved the message. Tonight, my phone rang. It was the SAME girl at almost the same time as the message last night. I introduced myself and she said it was the wrong number and she was looking for her sister. I told her I was a sister and asked if I could help. She told me her name,  she let me pray for her, and I told her I was in Kenai and would be available if she needed someone. I saved her name and number in my phone, thankful for having this ‘new’ way to let me hear people. I hope this girl doesn’t forget me and I hope I can help her or have helped her in some way. I am absolutely blessed by the different people who convinced me to finally get an Alaskan cell phone. For if I didn’t have it, I’d not know of this troubled girl and I’d not be able to keep her in my thoughts and prayers.

Decadence

20170211_193035

I had 3 hours of time all to myself tonight. Well, I wasn’t alone, but it was spent doing something completely without or for mom. I got to go to dinner with a friend. It was more than a blessing. It was freedom and I am absolutely thankful for my evening out. I am thankful for the lady who came and stayed with mom for me, for my friend who helped make this possible, and for the delicious meal and  fun dessert we were given. A dessert made by an incredibly talented 10 year old!

The dessert is shown above and the directions are below in a video clip. It was a lesson is magic, a lesson in fun, and a lesson in life. The hard sphere was secure until it was touched by warm caramel. The stream was poured out upon the cold chocolate, melting it until it collapsed. Once it caved in, a treasure of treats was revealed. Four of us shared this dessert.

I’ve been that hard shell. Closing myself off  in a world almost alone. Friend after friend has poured out their gracious care upon me and it seemed like it was just running off into the plate. Yet, finally, the shell of me fell inward. I was able to honestly share goodness with those around me this evening and I am grateful. I don’t know how often that shell will be built back, but I am sure it will be weaker. Knowing so many caring souls are out there supporting me, helping me, being there for me, is humbling and makes me stronger. Thank you to my friends in WP and in Real Life and all across the net. You have no idea how important you have been and are.

Chocolate Balls video clip. (no, I don’t remember how to add the video to the blog without paying more!)

Nurses

There are a great many people in this world who are in helping professions. This week I am entirely thankful for nurses. Women and men who go beyond their circumstances to help others. I have a good friend who, in her spare time (even when she is not feeling good), promotes vaccinations and goes on ambulance runs (and gives excellent hugs). She is a hero. The woman pictured above is also a hero. She is part of a team of persons who are at my fingertips. Literally. I can call their company and get help at any time during the day or night. Dawn was the first person we met and, I admit, I was a bit skeptical. She is young and a fruitcake. However, she is a WONDERFUL, beautiful fruitcake and I love her very, very much. I’d write more about Dawn, but this is supposed to be about Karen.

Karen, she takes her boots to places I’d not dare trek. This woman is a thesaurus of incredible. She encourages, fights for mom’s rights as a patient who can’t fight, advocates for the two of us when I am clueless, she laughs, appears to use air for sustenance, and is incredibly kind. I am entirely humbled by the good things this woman does for mom. For me. She comes to visit once a week and checks over mom to see how she is doing. She stops by often to drop things off and she calls frequently. She is an asset to the well being of mom. She is a beautiful woman with the superpower of caring. I’ve met some great people along this journey  with mum. Karen is one of many, one who stands out, and one I admire tremendously.

Thank you to you in the nursing field who bring hope and help and well being to the world around you.

Within

snowflakes3

We don’t have snow at this time. Oh, there is snow on the ground, but nothing from the sky.  Snowflakes remind me of how much more is inside a bit of frozen water. Remember the non-animated Grinch movie? Where inside the snowflake there was a vibrant world no one knew was there? This is today. Today, I have been surrounded by frozen water. It has been hard to see many of the crystals within. Yet, there have been many positives. Most days are like that. Harboring bits of both, but I need to remember to look.

This blog was created to remind me to discover the better parts. Created to help others remember to search for those good things. It isn’t about my beliefs or who I am away from my journey to find blessings. It is about diligently seeking for encouragement and sharing. It can be irritating to read about shining Pollyanna-like things pulled out from nowhere. I need to write them, though. I need to remember to seek for the world inside the frozen water, where laughter and light exist. On days like today, I really appreciate the belated birthday card with the tear making wish inside. I am thankful for the person who will pick up meds in a different town for me. I am humbled by the friend who will bring me clothing from my mom’s and take Mittens to the vet. I smile because of my  friend who texted me a fun new word to add to my personal lexicon (abecedarian). Within a hamster wheel sort of day, blessings are well, a blessing to find!

I’ll be jiggered!

one-lovely-blogger-award

I like blogs. I have a couple. I follow several. Living the Travel Channel, Alaskan at Last, Dennis Cardiff, Papa Does Preach, and my Canadian friend, Rebecca Dawn. Rebecca nominated one of my other blogs for an award and I was too new to blogging. Hadn’t a clue these were a thing, in my confusion, I dropped the award. I know some of my favorite blogs won’t bite, so am not ‘nominating’ them to do this. Even if they deserve it! However, I will pass this one on. (this particular post will be much longer than my normal ones. These awards are never brief!)  I am always cheered by finding updates in my emails from Rebecca. It is almost as heartwarming as getting real emails from her! She writes an eclectic sort of blog. One I immensely enjoy reading and commenting on. So, my dear friend, THANK YOU for bestowing another award on my meandering words. You changed the rules a bit (one of the other blogs I follow, also got this award), so I thank you for that, too! I’m a bit bound by some conventions and in blogging, I’m not sure what can or can’t be done in which platform! I’m going to follow your lead.

  • Thank the person who nominated you and link to their blog
  • Add the One Lovely Blog Award to your post
  • Share 7 things about yourself
  • Pass this on to as many people as you like
  • Include this set of rules

OK, I’ve done the first couple and the last one. So, 7 things about me you may not know about me…Seven. Sheesh.

  1. I enjoy musicals. As I wrote 7, my mind went to ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’ and ‘Snow White’ and ‘Schoolhouse Rock’ (yeah, that dates me!!!).
  2. I LOVE rain. After living on the Oregon Coast for 17 years, you either like it or hate it. Living in Eastern Oregon, I miss it tremendously. (and I do like ‘Singing in the Rain’!)
  3. I cannot dance and my singing is horrible. Mum was a music major and once told me she didn’t understand how she had two tone deaf kids. I’m not tone deaf, I just don’t sing very well. I last danced at my Senior Prom. I’m good at toe tapping. But, unlike Danny, this is one of those cats who doesn’t dance (GREAT movie dedicated to Gene Kelly-Cats Don’t Dance).
  4. I love people. I really really like people. It takes a great deal for me to not like someone. We all have so many different facets inside us, it is illogical to be angry with someone for being who they are. You can be angry with what they DO, but this might end up a dissertation if I continue! Sort of like that song from ‘1776’, Molasses to Rum.
  5. I am more fond of words than numbers and whoever put letters in with numbers, and said it made sense, should hang out in Wonderland for a few months. Of all the confusing and ridiculous things to do with letters, this is by far the worst.
  6. In spite of being the author of more than one blog and having an active FB account, I do prefer my privacy. Sort of like a lighthouse, that ‘Candle on the Water.’ Where I can see and communicate with  everyone and yet remain on my own island!
  7. I am a great laugh track for live theatre. Especially, if I know the production. I appreciate the theatre and go as often as I can. I enjoyed working behind the scenes and I love sitting in an audience. ‘You have to believe it is magic’ being surrounded by the scent of greasepaint and the recreation of characters from people you might know. Incredible.

Now, for my own nominations. As I said, many of the people I follow may not even know who I am! They may not want nominated. I don’t know. However, they really are blessings.  I’ll share some more of my favorites. If you click the names, the should open in a new window.

  1. Cauldrons and Cupcakes. Thoughts on life and death and survival.
  2. Tarnished Soul. Poetry and prose
  3. CutterLight. An Alaskan Blog.
  4. The Darkest Fairytale  poetry
  5. Living the Travel Channel (Kanga is going to be annoyed, if she finds out I nominated her, but by golly! I love this blog and recommend it often.)

Dispensing More

img_5600

Webster defines pharmacy as ‘the art, practice, or profession of preparing, preserving, compounding, and dispensing medical drugs.’ Yet those words barely touch on the compassion and investment from the persons who perform this service for others. In the community of Kenai, there are many pharmacies and pharmacists and techs who fill orders from hospitals and physicians. I have found Kenai’s Safeway to be the most efficient place to get mine. Transfers of script from Eastern Oregon to Kenai have been rather necessary and nothing seems to stump the persons who work in this store.

Yet, the pharmacy dispenses more than that. I’ve had to collect and pay for numerous scripts for mum in the last months, making me realise anew how incredible these employees are. I wrote about an experience I had earlier this summer, an experience typical of this group of caring people. Each employee goes beyond the window of ‘cash and carry’ to help. It is obvious the individual is the one who is important to Matt, Mike, Stacey, and the others. They invest in the community they belong to while they advise, encourage, and listen. I do not know what will happen from day-to-day with mum. I do know I can count on the help of professionals and friends in the Kenai Safeway pharmacy to strengthen me as I wonder. They are special lights and blessings in my world.

Birthdays

img_5598

First, I am confused by how the font in this blog got so skewed. I hope I’ve fixed it. Please, pardon the dust as I disturb posts! Second, Birthdays! As I contemplate the past hours, I realise looking for good things is the only way I can see the ‘fantastic day’ I was wished by so many. I did NOT have to change mom’s fittings again. I did not have to take her to the ER. Mom woke up today. A paper mum had gotten months ago did not require being sent in to continue her medical aid. My coffee cake was delicious. I managed to get the rice at dinner to turn out after all. I got to talk to Steve, Jon, and Tony today. Both nieces contacted me in different ways. One of my friends brought me flowers. Another dear friend (remember Rose from a previous post?), gave me some new clothes. Many friends from near and far dropped me greetings via Face Books reminders. My Aunt and Uncle called and SANG to me!!! I learned some fun things about when I was born. When I look at the big picture, it was a good day. I have not a clue what the next journey around the sun might be like. I do not know where the turnings will take me. I do know I will stand with the shining lights around me and be thankful for whatever happens.
