Deleted scene from 'Logan' regarding Sabretooth by BreakingGarrick in movies

[–]girafa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm laying this out for my sake as we as anyone who cares.

The mythos is an old west hero protecting new west folks from a new west threat who is using an old west agent of evil. In the end the old west hero defeats the old west agent of evil, saving the new west folks, however the old west hero cannot go with the new west folk, they don't belong to the same world.

It's a trope used in Once Upon a Time in the West, Shane, Pale Rider, Open Range, and variants of these elements are found in The Wild Bunch, Serenity, Appaloosa, & The Searchers. Definitely not a complete list.

Logan is Shane (old west hero, he's from the land & fights with his talent, grit, wits, and morality)

Ryker the Cattle Baron is Transigen's Pierce (new west threat. Why are they new west? Because cattle barons are industrialized and at odds with the frontiersman "free grazers" and simple farms. Transigen is futuretech industrializing the natural mutants.)

X-23 and the gang of kids is the new west folk, the family from Shane. They're the fresh start. new west folk, like the family from Shane, are marked by being morally sound, a chance are being more civilized and rejecting the savagery of the old west frontier ways.

Now here's where we split from the analogy. We need an old west agent of evil. In Shane, Ryker hires Wilson, a man Shane's heard about, a gunfighter like Shane, but even older so he's definitely old west. In Logan, this character is X-24, a brand new shiny Wolverine clone with no previous knowledge or interaction with Logan.

The argument is made that X-24 represents the animistic side of Wolverine, and he's defeating that.

Had Transigen hired Sabretooth to duke it out with Wolverine it would've done the same symbolic gesture of defeating the animal side of Wolverine, because Sabretooth has always been the animal counterpart to him, but it would've also given him an historical achievement by defeating his literal past, not a symbolic past.

Basically just rewrote everything we've already said, for clarity.

I love the living fuck out of this movie. Soooo many great lines, and I love the kind of characters like Kilmer's. His guy was so confident, so sharp, that it was as if he was never really in any danger, what dragged you in was just watching the way he worked. We didn't see him wrestle with "oh gosh shucks just how am I going to overcome my personal demons and become the hero errbody wants..."

He just got shit done.

I hear ya, but that's not the Shane western mythos at all, which is what the movie was going for. To claim he's a part of Logan is a stretch, he's literally another version made by other people while Logan is old. No connection to Logan's past deeds, sins, interactions, anything. Shane didn't defeat Shane Clone Made By Bad Guys In Future What Could've Been Shane If Shane Wasn't Shane So Sayeth The Bad Guys, he defeated Jack Palance, a "relic of the old west," one that the New West couldn't handle. No matter how you stretch the straws, the future clone of alt-Wolverine is not a relic of the old west, it quite literally is a product of the shiny tech future.

I mean, you can say that the T-800 represents man's warlike nature and therefore it's also a relic from the past, but it's a big stretch.

Equally if Harmonica from Once Upon a Time in the West fought a alt-clone-Harmonica who played the accordion and was, so they say, Harmonica If He Had Only Chosen The Accordion - that's a shit representation of the old west relic.

Frank & Ryker were better villains because they fit the narrative better than Deus Ex Wolvie Clone.

Again, good movie, just wish they had a better villain.

X-24 isn't a product of Logan though, it's not any sort of sin from the past. He's not responsible for its creation.

Introducing a new, futuretech version of Wolverine we've never seen isn't anything to do with his origins either from the comics nor the films.

Problem I had was that it breaks from the Western mythos. Logan is a part of the old west. The new west is civilization, which is at odds with the old west. In Shane, it's old west (villains) versus old west (Shane) for the sake of the new west's (domestic family) survival. It always has to be an agent of the frontier defeating another agent of the frontier for the survival of the new, peaceful civilization. Then the agent cannot be a part of the new civilization. Just like Serenity, the Operative says he's a monster that can't enter the domestic world. Just like The Searchers. Just like Pale Rider (basically Shane again). Since Logan wanted to be Shane, it breaks from it in a huge way here.

Logan's clone is the new west. It's new technology, cutting edge future tech. It's not his past, it's not a frontier-relic that only another frontier relic can put down. If it was old business, like Sabretooth, it would've made more sense.

This isn't a real complaint, but more of a "wish the villian was someone else" musing.

Infotainment is still on TV. The Bachelor is still on TV, etc. The problems of visual media are still the same.

Also Network wasn't about only kids watching TV.

Directors reusing the same props in different movies by dracarys509 in movies

[–]girafa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the same director, but I feel like sharing this story anyway:

A couple of years ago I worked on the Eli Young Band's video for "Say Goodnight." We finished doin pickup shots on a Friday in the middle of the day in the middle of a city and I didn't want to drive back through rush hour so I went to the movies and bought a ticket to Argo.

Lo and behold, 2/3's through the movie they do the table read/pre-pro deal for Argo and all kinds of robot costumes are there - including the one we had rented in LA because it was "one of a kind" and used for the past few days on the music video.

How do I find a job that will increase my income? (23 feeling stuck , $144k/yr) by Masersace in personalfinance

[–]girafa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't take the downvotes personally.

I'm not any sort of expert on this subject, but to afford that you're probably going to need to invent something, grow a business, or develop real estate. Unless you're a celebrity rarely have I seen that kind of wealth come from working for someone else.

edit: although it depends on which city, I guess. I can afford a mansion in some countries :)

[–]girafa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hire someone to run your current operation at a lower wage than what you're making, then get a job elsewhere to gain experience. Might be a salary hit at the new job, but the income from your side business would make up the difference and maybe more.

So, for example, if you paid someone $60k/yr to do the software selling thing and kept the extra $84k, you could get a $100k job in a skill-building-trajectory and be making $184k/yr while building the necessary experience for whatever those better jobs are.
