Initially, his face was blurred, specifically his ear and hair. I imported from LR to photoshop and overall sharpened the photo, and then reduced noise to prevent it from becoming grainy. Admittedly, I might have adjust the bar too far because, like you mentioned, it became soft. Then i did further edits through LR to blend it and change certain exposure points. Although I would rather have it crisp, I didn't mind the way it turned out.
