Hello LPT subscribers,

This community has existed for nine years and has more subscribers than some smaller countries have citizens. (Belgium has 11.4m)

We find that over time our rules have become bloated and unwieldy, making the subreddit hard to moderate and more importantly, difficult to post to.

Each rule we have was added for a very good reason at the time. (In the sidebar there is a rule saying no tips about rubber snakes. A few years ago there was an issue with rubber snake tips.)

But over the years we have added rule after rule and never removed any and this resulted in rules creep, a sort of nightmarish morass you guys need to navigate when you want to post here.

This ends today. We're massively overhauling the rules, removing most of the restricted tip list and making participating here a lot easier.

Rules that we will keep

No tips about:

Legal, parenting, driving, tips that break the law, hygiene (including toilet), religious, relationship, troll/ joke.

Sure, if you’re going to save a tremendous amount of money through hotels.com or something similar, then go for it. But far too often you are treated like a second-class citizen when you show up with a third-party booking. It has happened to me several times, and I have witnessed it many many times. If there are problems, they always try to make you go back and deal with the booking agency, who then in turn tell you that it’s a hotel issue. It’s a merry-go-round that you definitely don’t want to be on. Also, you are much less likely to be accommodated with perks and upgrades if you did not book directly. I have learned this the hard way on a couple of occasions and have finally learned my lesson. It’s not worth it for a few bucks savings...

The IT people in any organization have it tough, so be nice to them and one day it will come back to you. Its easy to be mad when your stuff breaks or doesn't work right. And yes they are asking you dumb simple questions. There is a reason- turning it off and then on does actually work an amazing amount of the time. Work anywhere long enough and you with either (a) do a dumb thing or (b) click on the even worst thing; and that's when not being a dick to the poor IT folks will usually pay off (to the extent not being a dick ever needs any payoff- but you know what I mean).

This rule generally also applies to door people, cleaning people ect. They see and talk to everyone. Don't let your bad day effect how you interact with them. Be professional and warm, even if you have to fake it that day.

Spend the 1st weekend of the new year calling all of your annual contacts. I just negotiated down my DirecTV bill down $45/month by threatening to move to Xfinity. Just got off the phone with Xfinity and negotiated $60 off my monthly bill by threatening to move to DirecTV.

New rates are valid for 12 months.

Do this for services you pay monthly on. Newspaper, cable, internet etc. It's become somewhat of an annual ritual.

So for 2020 I just started with a $1200 raise.

A neighbor burned down part of his house this way. He stubbed out a smoke before bed, four hours later the house was on fire.

If you’re suffering from depression or if you have suicidal thoughts, please take a moment to create a list of everything you’re grateful for. It’s not going to cure you, but it’s going to help you see the bigger picture and be more mindful of the people and things around you in general. You can even write down the very small things in life that people normally take for granted. And hopefully this will help you in general.

Research has shown that people who write gratefulness lists before bed are 25% happier and more mindful than those who don’t.

Here is an example of a gratefulness list, from me (I date them, as I make one every few days)

~Things to be Grateful 01/02/2020 ~

  1. Being able to sleep well at night

  2. Getting to work on time

  3. For Shane who gave me a stamp

  4. The coffee that Von brewed so I didn’t have to

  5. For the customers at work not being terrible today

  6. Being kept warm by my raincoat

  7. For getting home safely even with the rain

  8. Having time to watch The Witcher

So this is just an example of things I could appreciate in my life. It ranges from more obvious things, like having enough time to watch Netflix, to smaller things like getting to work on time.

Of course once again, this isn’t going to cure anybody, but it’s a way to be more appreciative of your greater surroundings and I hope it’ll make you happier overall.

A friend of mine went to a national dental chain for the first time last week and was told he had 7 cavities. He didn’t have any a year earlier, so he went to another, local, dentist who told him he didn’t even have one. Apparently this happens a lot and needs to be reported. You can save a lot of money, time, and pain.

Also, go get your 6-month checkup — You won’t regret it!
