    Crossword answers

    Where ambition happens

Not every Garage project kicks off with a client telling us exactly what they need. This was the case with McLane – a wholesale grocery foods distributor making over $50 billion in sales. The company needed to boost a razor-thin profit margin, but it didn’t know where to turn.

We analyzed the business and focused on its fleet of over 6,000 trailers. With such a huge presence on the American highways, could these trucks lead a second life as moving billboards?

    Eye-catching growth

To evaluate and target advertising content, we put satellite trackers on the trucks that would receive pings from cell phones within a 100-meter radius. As a result, McLane can now pitch different routes to potential advertisers, and enjoy a revenue stream that simply didn’t exist before.

We helped turn McLane trucks into moving billboards, creating a brand new revenue stream for the business.

    Where a new framework happens

    Where co-creation happens

We bring together IBMers and clients in an environment where silos and barriers never have the chance to form.

Co-creation—the concept of gathering teams to design, prove, and launch innovative programs—is an increasingly vital tool today. At the IBM Garage, we bring together IBMers and client stakeholders in an environment where silos and barriers never have the chance to form.

    Creating a learning-by-doing environment

Implementing AI can be daunting. You either need to acquire the skills, buy them, or get a partner. We’re the third option—but notched up to a whole new level. The IBM Garage isn’t about remote work. We collaborate on site, so we can share and grow innovative, cutting-edge ideas. We create a learning-by-doing environment, and part of that is recognizing that you’re going to iterate. We don’t wait until the outcomes are perfect to start generating insights.

It’s OK to start with imperfect data

Many organizations don’t start AI and analytics projects simply because they think not enough of their data is up to scratch and won't yield useful results. But you can kickstart a project with the data that is in good shape. You can add other data sets (or enhance your data with external data sets) later.

For projects to work, you need a maniacal focus on business value. Whatever you’re creating needs to be aligned with business strategy and objectives.

    Lori Victor Feller,
IBM CPT Partner & Global Garage Leader

    Where courage happens

“If you want to increase your success rate, double your failure rate.”
    Thomas J. Watson,
    IBM Chairman, 1914 - 1956

    Where empathy happens

A founding principle of the garage model is IBM Design Thinking.

It is a framework designed to focus on the human emotions that define the response to any new product, service or experience.

IBM Design Thinking focuses on the human emotions that define the response to any new product, service or experience.

    Where AI happens

All around the world AI is driving change.

    Talking the talk

In the seven years since Watson’s creation, natural language communication has come on leaps and bounds. Today’s chatbots, for instance, are routinely resolving customer service enquiries without human involvement, increasing customer satisfaction and enabling businesses to channel resources into areas of more strategic value.

    Sense and sensibility

A key driver in the maturing of AI is Watson’s ability to mimic human senses and awareness. There are driverless cars that can navigate routes and identify danger. Sports tournaments that automatically compile highlights packages by analyzing and understanding expressions on the faces in the crowd. And even a blind runner who used AI, geolocation and proximity alerts to compete among the masses at the New York marathon.

A key driver in the maturing of AI is Watson's ability to mimic human senses and awareness.

    Where success happens

    Where scalability happens

We collaborated with the Province of Nova Scotia to bring automated external defibrillators (AEDs) online via IoT sensors and a pioneering mobile app. It’s a life-saving solution for many of the 40,000 people who experience cardiac arrest every year in Canada – 85% of them, outside the home.

40,000 cardiac arrests occur every year in Canada

On June 9, 2016, 23-year-old Sean Ferguson collapsed while shooting hoops at Cape Breton University in Nova Scotia, Canada. The quick thinking of his friends, along with a nearby automated external defibrillator, or AED, saved his life.

But AEDs can only do their job if bystanders know exactly where to find one when emergency strikes. Luckily for Sean, his friends knew where to look.

Heart defibrillators, meet the Internet of Things‍

To enable citizens to locate an AED and help emergency services direct people to one, the government of Nova Scotia began a pioneering IBM Garage collaboration. Together, we developed a solution that brought AEDs online via IoT sensors and a mobile app.

Early project successes mean the proof of concept can now be pushed further. The Province wants to connect every AED in Nova Scotia to the 911 system, create a smartphone app, and send emergency text alerts to registered citizens with CPR knowledge. All at a cost of one million Canadian dollars

“The cost is not a prohibitive variable here… because what we’re doing is taking commercially available technology and applying it in a smart way.”
    Shawn Porter,
    Nova Scotia Innovation Director

    Where solving happens

Stephen Sondheim, who composed crosswords for New York Magazine in the 1960s, is reported to have said that “the nice thing about doing a crossword puzzle is, you know there is a solution.”

In a sense that’s true of the IBM Garage too: there’s a determination to work toward a viable solution to an identified problem within a fixed period of time. And the garage mindset— mixing creativity, determination and a big slice of lateral thinking—has much in common with the traits of a crossword solver.

So we’ve designed a crossword puzzle for you. It’s a chance to test your logic skills and give you a taste of the garage mentality.

    Where cloud happens

A clear focus on the IBM Cloud has specific advantages. It immediately aligns innovation to a proven toolbox of cloud-based components and robust infrastructure architectures.

It’s 2014. In the heart of Silicon Valley, a new initiative is born.

It’s driven by passionate people with a startup mentality and a vision to match. But this is not a startup. It’s an IBM Garage, dedicated to cloud solutions.

The vision of our San Francisco garage was to create an environment that would help businesses dream, experiment and test out ways they could harness the power of the cloud to innovate, modernize and transform.

    A safe space that de-risks high-risk ideas

A clear focus on the IBM Cloud has specific advantages. It immediately aligns innovation to a proven toolbox of cloudbased components and robust infrastructure architectures. And it presents huge opportunities to develop, test, launch and rapidly scale viable processes, platforms and initiatives.

This can be seen in our work with Sony Global Education in Japan, where we helped create a blockchain-powered record platform. Education may not be an industry that you’d automatically associate with blockchain and cloud technology. But garage projects are often full of surprises.

    Where disruption happens

“In the IBM Garage you get to work with the actual inventors of the technology. The people who understand it the most. So you’re not experimenting with new technology, you’re using it. IBM’s been through the experimental phase. You don’t have to.”
“In the IBM Garage you get to work with the actual inventors of the technology. The people who understand it the most.”
    Cortney Knoll,
IBM DS&iX Partner & Global Garage Leader

    Where disruption happens

“We don’t use technology for technology’s sake. Rather, we push your existing strengths and introduce new components and engineering practices to maximize speed, scale and client value.”
“We don’t use technology for technology’s sake.”
    Chris San Soucie,
IBM CAI Director & Enterprise Garage Leader

    Where connection happens

“There is no hiding in the garage. We work together project after project, building off both success and failure. We air differences and iron them out together. We understand each other and move as one.”

    Where viability happens

An iterative approach means you keep learning from continual feedback. And that means a better end result.

The advantage of an iterative approach is that you keep learning from continual feedback. It surfaces all the extra features and benefits that might otherwise have been missed.

So, if you want to get from point A to point B, don’t spend all your budget on building a motorbike. Start with a skateboard and work from there.

    Where blockchain happens

AIG and Standard Charter were able to develop a blockchain-based policy with the IBM Garage, offering a new level of trust and transparency in the insurance underwriting process.

    Rethink everything

From transforming supply chains and contracts, to shaping IP protection and new business models, organizations everywhere are waking up to blockchain’s potential.

Success with AIG and Standard Charter

AIG and Standard Charter were able to develop a blockchain based policy with the IBM Garage, offering a new level of trust and transparency in the insurance underwriting process. By using a blockchain strategy, we managed to cut through the complexity associated with multiple policies, countries and regulatory frameworks. Smart contracts on the blockchain also reduced friction and cost for policyholders.

“Our pilot proves blockchain has a powerful role to play in the future of insurance. Any technology, including blockchain, that can increase trust and transparency for an industry should be fully explored. We’re excited to be delivering innovation that matters to our clients—and co-developing key components of this new technology together.”
    Rob Schimek,
    Former CEO of Commercial, AIG
