Dear Heschel Community,

I am honored to begin my tenure as Campaign Committee Chair and to work together with a committed group of incredible parent volunteers, and all of you, to help our beloved school in a direct and meaningful way.

The Annual Campaign provides critical financial support to the fulfillment of the Heschel mission through our dedicated and gifted faculty and staff; our distinct and talented student body; and our curricular and co-curricular programming. Heschel’s pluralistic learning community provides our students with opportunities to challenge themselves academically and socially, to develop their commitment and connection to Israel and the Jewish people, and, ultimately, to thrive in life.

My family loves Heschel for all that it offers us and our children, who are now in grades 10, 6 and 1. We are deeply grateful to the administration, faculty and staff for all they do to make our school and community so special. And we are thankful for all of you--parents, grandparents, alumni, alumni parents and friends--for all you do to enable Heschel to pursue its educational and communal mission. Please join me and participate in this year’s campaign. Your gift, no matter the size, is essential and deeply appreciated.

Many Thanks,

David Kaufthal

SUPPORTING HESCHEL thiS YEAR

This past year was a year like no other. Thankfully, as always, our Heschel students and our mission give us the precious gift of light and hope.

Every day Heschel faculty and staff, along with our parents and volunteers, do the work of keeping our continuous flame lit and our communal hope alive.

When you give to Heschel’s Annual Campaign you provide the resources needed to nurture our special community. Your gift helps us attract, support and retain our exceptional faculty and staff, admit and support our talented and diverse student body, and invest in the future of our educational and co-curricular program. The Annual Campaign helps us bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Heschel education.

Heschel administrators, faculty, staff, and students vigorously pursue our school’s mission every day. Heschel nurtures our students’ lifelong love of learning; creates an environment of academic excellence; builds an ethical learning community; inspires our students’ spiritual lives and Jewish identities; fosters our students’ love of and connection to Medinat Yisrael; and helps our students understand and practice the values of pluralism, tzedek (justice), and hesed (loving kindness).

Heschel is unique and special, and it is because of you – our donors – that the eternal flame of hope stays lit.

Thank you for your participation.

FUNDRAISING AT HESCHEL

Heschel’s Annual Fund enables us to deliver on our mission for all of our students every day; capital fundraising keeps our buildings modern and safe; and our endowment secures the financial future of our school. At Heschel, our approach to fundraising is driven by our school’s commitment to pluralism and mission. Our goal is to tell the powerful story of our school and warmly invite parents, grandparents, alumni, alumni parents, and friends to be part of the story. Heschel donors give because they are compelled by the school’s mission and our educators’ and administrators’ enactment of it. Our donors give to express gratitude, to celebrate, to commemorate, and to honor. Heschel is Heschel because of you.

ANNUAL FUND

The Annual Campaign powers our overall annual fundraising and is the largest contributor to our Annual Fund total. Your Annual Fund participation (gifts to this Annual Campaign, gifts designated to our scholarship fund, gifts in memory or in honor, and gifts toward the Annual Benefit), no matter when you make your gift, will be recognized in two ways: you will be listed in the leveled listing released at the Annual Benefit in the spring of 2025*, and you will be listed alphabetically next fall in the campaign materials, as the 2023-2024 donors are listed here.

In our Annual Campaign we ask our parents, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, and friends to make a gift to Heschel. A special and critical aspect of this campaign is our volunteers on the Campaign Committee and the Development Committee who ask members of our community by phone, email, and in-person to support Heschel. We encourage donors to give as early as possible in the Fall months because it helps Heschel with planning and budgeting.

*The purchase of Benefit tickets is in addition to your annual gift. Tickets will be on sale approximately 2 months in advance of the Benefit (May 27, 2025) and are partially tax deductible. All community members who purchase Benefit tickets will be recognized on an additional list of Benefit Patrons.

FAQs

  • Like all private schools, we fundraise at Heschel to bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Heschel education. Fundraising comprises close to 10% of our budget revenue. Your gift to the Annual Fund supports all of the ways that we strive to achieve our mission in the daily lives of our students, including supporting and retaining our exceptional faculty and staff. Your gift enables us to provide our students with a unique and exceptional education and to nurture our distinct, intentional, pluralistic, and socio-economically diverse community.

HESCHEL’S MISSION

Abraham Joshua Heschel School is an independent Jewish day school named in memory of one of the great Jewish leaders, teachers, and activists of the 20th century and dedicated to the values that characterized Rabbi Heschel’s life: intellectual exploration, integrity, love of the Jewish people and tradition, and a commitment to social justice. The Heschel School is a pluralistic, egalitarian community that includes families from a wide range of Jewish backgrounds, practices, and beliefs. Boys and girls, men and women participate equally in all aspects of the school’s religious, intellectual, and communal life.

The Heschel School regards the texts of the Jewish tradition and the history of the Jewish people as fundamental resources for developing ideas, beliefs, behaviors, and values to shape and inspire the lives of individuals in our time. In an open and engaging academic setting, the school’s curriculum interweaves the best of both Jewish and general knowledge and culture throughout the school day.

The school’s approach to education is governed by profound respect for students. It nurtures their curiosity, cultivates their imagination, encourages creative expression, values their initiative, and engenders critical thinking skills. The school is committed to the development of the whole child and supports each student’s intellectual, emotional, social, physical, and spiritual growth. In addition, the school seeks to create an environment that encourages the professional and personal growth of teachers, administrators, and staff.

Among the central goals of the Abraham Joshua Heschel School are the following:

• Fostering a lifelong love of learning. The school seeks to develop the understanding that the discovery of personal meaning and the growth of individual identity can emerge from the rigors of study.

• Creating an environment of intellectual challenge and academic excellence.

• Creating an ethical learning community that inspires its students to become responsible, active, compassionate citizens, and leaders in the Jewish and world communities.

• Cultivating the spiritual lives of its students and the nurturing of their commitment to Jewish values. The school helps students learn about and respect a range of Jewish practices and encourages them to embody these traditions in the way they live their lives; students learn the skills that enable them to participate fully in Jewish life.

• Building of bridges between different sectors of the Jewish community, and between the Jewish community and other communities, as expressions of our religious imperative to unite human beings through justice, shared humanity, and mutual respect.

• Fostering in its students a deep commitment to and a lifelong relationship with the State of Israel and its language, culture and people, in recognition of the centrality of the State of Israel to Jewish identity and to the Jewish people.
