Courage, Curiosity, and Compassion: How Media and Tech Affect Character in Kids

Developing character strengths and life skills are essential to kids' overall growth and success. It helps them learn, create, and relate in healthy ways. Yet do today’s kids prefer texting to talking? Are they missing crucial social cues if they are glued to their screens?

What

Our first annual Bay Area luncheon, “Courage, Curiosity, and Compassion: How Media and Tech Affect Character in Kids”, will feature Common Sense Founder and CEO Jim Steyer and a panel of experts from the media and child psychology fields in a conversation on how technology may be complicating relationships as we adjust to today’s new digital normal and what may be lost as we try to create balance. Kids adapt naturally to the digital world and have become expert at telling their own stories and immersing themselves in the stories of others. Our assumption is that they're losing critical interpersonal skills. But are they? Are we losing opportunities to learn empathy in real time or does being interconnected with people all over the world enrich our understanding of others.

Funds raised through the annual Bay Area Luncheon help enable us to make Common Sense's FREE resources available to every family, educator, and school in the region and throughout the country.
