About Us
The Algemeiner
The Algemeiner, a global news destination published online, serves as an independent media voice covering the Middle East, Israel and matters of Jewish interest around the world.
It was founded in 1972 by famed journalist Gershon Jacobson as Der Algemeiner Journal and was originally published in Yiddish. In 2012, Algemeiner.com was launched in English. The Algemeiner’s Publisher is Simon Jacobson, eldest son of our founder Gershon Jacobson.
Algemeiner is a Yiddish/German word that means “universal” or “all inclusive.” It was chosen because of Gershon’s stated desire to reach as many people as possible with the paper’s coverage.
David M. Cohen, Esq., M.Sc. became the CEO in September 2024 with a vision for significant growth, including expanding our digital footprint, deepening our connection with a worldwide audience and using artificial intelligence to transform the media landscape.
Our team of capable journalists is led by our Executive Editor Aaron Kliegman, formerly of Fox News.
The Algemeiner is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and is funded by private donors.
