Post Christmas Update

I had to take a day yesterday as some friends from SA decided to come over for a visit, so we spent the first part of the day preparing for “lunch” and then the visit, and then the cleanup. They’re good folk from the RGV moving to SA about the same time we moved here.

The forecast was for thunderstorms yesterday, and they arrived just after the first of the rains ended; enough so we had time enough to take them on a partial tour of the outbuildings and a spot where we wanted to set up a shooting range.

A small range for ourselves is perfectly legal, but one has to contend with the neighbors complaining to the Sheriff department about noise. Not 100 yards away would be the closest horses…non in danger of flying bullets, but the noise…still talking about it. It would take some work to clear and set up the behind the target bullet absorbers or whatever the term is.

Behind the target the property goes uphill. A few straw round bales would be a good idea, but I worry about the rodentia possibly moving in…hmmm,  maybe not a bad idea after all. Behind that area is also a thicket of cedar and oak trees…still would need some more buffer…Maybe just a dirt hill would do. I have a buddy with a backhoe.

Our friends admitted he was a little jealous of our situation; being in the country, growing our own, separate living quarters on site, the comparative tranquillity compared to that of big city SA. I also think they’re suffering from a bit of cabin fever, being that they downsized from a 3/2 house to an apartment. I told him to be patient, as we waited a long time to get where we are. He still has four years before he can retire early, and even then, not a lot of income.

Last night, the thunderstorms rolled through well after dark. Lots of wind, rain, thunder, lightning, and even some hail. This morning, it’s like nothing ever happened; clear, sunny and warming to high sixties. A bit unseasonably warm, but we’ll take it…lots of folks got it worse.

I am glad I got the granular insecticide spread over the area where I’ll have to dig for the busted water line. I found another fire anthill down there…it could get ugly.

I miss my pal Bubba. I emailed him a few days ago. He says he’s all right. Bubba was the first person to comment when I entered the blogosphere.

Stephen dropped off the blogosphere a few years ago after his daughter’s divorce took his granddaughter away out of his reach. He had a way with words. He has a wealth of knowledge including guns and prepping. I believe he owns a pawn shop in the Atlanta area.

Sarge  will be missed by all who followed him. His recent passing has left a hole in our blogosphere. RiP Sarge

I try to respond to all comments.
