A New Quilt Design

Posted on December 11, 2018

I LOVE improv quilt design!!!  The process of creating a design on my wall, as I go, and working with the fabric and colors I am inspired by, just gives me such satisfaction and sense of creative resonance.  This is and probably always will be my “go to” way to create a quilt and the one to which I am most drawn.

However, as my family life gets busier and busier,  and I find I have less time to ponder my next design move on a large improv piece, I am more drawn to using a pattern to create a quilt. What I love about a pattern is that I know exactly what is needed before I get started; fabric quantity, what exactly to cut, where I will be placing it, etc.  There is something very relaxing, yet exciting at the same time, about cutting out all the guesswork and knowing that you are in process of creating a beautiful, modern finished piece!

I recently discovered the Electric Quilt 8 Program and it has allowed me the freedom to create my own pattern for a quilt.

Portal Quilt- Hard

I still feel strongly drawn to creating my own designs, as opposed using someone else’s pattern,  so this program allows me to create what I like and then assists me in the process of creating it, by calculating how much fabric I’ll need, creating the block templates if needed, allowing me to play with block placement, etc!

My first few attempts were pretty basic and not worth making, as I was still figuring out the program and wasn’t familiar with all that it could do (still have a lot to learn about it, I’m sure).  I finally honed in on several patterns that I love and have created a variety of, both literally and digitally.

Portal Quilt Cover Page

The Portal Quilt is my first quilt pattern that I hope to have out to you all in a PDF format soon.  It is a modern design that uses one block design but with different color variations.  The blocks are created using templates for accuracy and consistency.  With this block pattern, you can choose a very basic layout and color palette in which you are making all your blocks identical, OR you can vary them for more intricate designs(shown in this post).  The possibilities are endless.

Portal Quilt Variation Rectangluar

The finished product can be really stunning and there are countless color and placement options.

Portal Quilt 6 x 6 block layout

Many of my layouts with this block ended up as center medallion designs, however you could go in a completely different direction as in the example above.

Portal Quilt Master Bedroom

The funny thing about this quilt design and the fact that it is mine,  is that the finished product reads best when all points match up very precisely!!  So for this improv design quilter, I’m up against a learning curve of sorts and have had to develop some new skills through this process. Great!! It’s how I keep growing as a quilter so I welcome the challenge, however frustrating it can be at times.  You can check out my process and some almost there finishes on my Instagram.

Log Cabin Pillow Cover

Posted on November 20, 2018

So throw pillow covers are definitely  turning into one of my favorite things to create! fullsizeoutput_490cA few weeks back, I completed a log cabin-y block made out of some of my most favorite linens and an interesting variety of scraps that I’ve been enjoying working with lately.

fullsizeoutput_48beWhile I generally tend to create log cabin blocks that are more improv pieced and less measured and straight, I decided to go more traditional (I know, still not that traditional… or that straight).

IMG_5071I work with a great deal of linen and over the years, I have managed to fill quite a large scrap bin with a beautiful variety.  I also dug out my yarn dyed Indian indigos and some locally screen printed scraps, along with some old designer scraps I acquired years ago at my favorite localish fabric store- Superbuzzy!

IMG_5072I really love all the texture, these different fabrics give the piece.  They are some of my favorites!

fullsizeoutput_48bfAfter creating this block with no other thing in mind other than wanting to see these fabrics together in a log cabin variation, I decided to quilt it up with some clean vertical lines (sorry for the weird blur in this photo- portrait mode is not always my friend).

fullsizeoutput_490afullsizeoutput_490e7FrDJyuiQK2ag5tuuefYCQIt hung on my wall for a bit before I realized that it needed to be a pillow cover!  So my new favorite way to create a pillow back is a very basic, minimal linen envelop closure, which turned out to be quick, easy and functional

EMcaw27AR9mHHDaGLVfTXQI love this pillow (16 X 16) so much, I’ll need to scrounge up some more of these fabrics in my bins to make a partner for it.  It happens to be listed solo right now (sold) in my Etsy shop if you are interested and don’t want to wait for the pair!  So I guess for me, right now, as a busy mom with three busy daughters, one whom I am homeschooling, I’m all about projects that I can complete in less time than the quilts I made for years, but that still allow me the freedom to be creative and pay attention to the details that are important.

Now, it’s back to pies and cranberry sauce!  Have a lovely Thanksgiving!

An Abstract in Linen

Posted on November 16, 2018

A piece I made over the summer, and has been hanging on my design wall for months will finally go to the next phase of completion.

Untitled Abstract

I am excited to get this small piece basted to I can begin some hand quilting.

This piece was created using all variety of linen and shot cotton fabrics from my stash. When sewing a quilt with linen, I usually try to sew a 1/2 rather than 1/4 as the linen weave tends to fray easily at the seam.  Since I knew this would not be a functional quilt but likely a wall hanging and not requiring a frequent wash, I mostly sewed a regular 1/4 seam allowance.

The colors in this piece were inspired by a backpacking trip in the Eastern Sierras this past summer.  The greens and blues were breathtaking!

Hoping to get this little piece all basted up today, and get on to the next phase!

So Hard to Commit

Posted on November 12, 2018

One of my goals this weekend was to baste this quilt that has been lovingly tucked away since we moved out of our old home, almost 5 years ago now, and into our little downtown cottage.  We were recently able to add on to our space and I now have a studio to create again!! Yay!  It’s been fun to go through my old starts, scraps, etc., and find a couple of old finished quilt tops.

This particular top is one I loved creating with my massive amount of scraps that I had at the time, back in 2013, and wanted to utilize in a creative way.  I used my Half Square Triangle-Scrappy Strings method  to create the squares, and my design wall to come up with a layout for them.  I wanted something that felt traditional with a twist- modern, yet  charming!

After trying out several options(old photos above), I finally decided to just commit to something and sew them together!  I think it might have been my very first sewing project in our new home. Back when I was occupying an entire corner of our only living space in order to keep sewing!

Now, all these years later, I can’t remember how I might have envisioned quilting it and have become very drawn to hand quilting- although I have no idea where I think I’ll find the time for that.

Scrappy Strings- Untitled basting

I love this quilt as it is right now.  It’s sometimes scary to me to put it under the needle of my hand or machine and start quilting. With some quilts, the design will just come to me as I’m piecing it or basting it.  I just know!  But with this this one…..not happening!  What if I choose wrong, don’t like the design?  It’s just so permanent!!  Do any of you all feel like that or am I just overthinking it?

Scrappy Strings- Untitled ready to baste

I hope to conquer my fears (ha) and commit to something today so I can get started on completion of this long overdue Scrappy Strings quilt project.  Please send creative genius energy my way, if you happen to have some to spare!

PS. Happy Veteran’s Day!

A Finish…..and Thoughts

Posted on November 11, 2018

Hi there all…..well California is in it again.  With yet another fire close by, the familiar stench of smoke fills the air here in Santa Barbara.  My heart aches for our state of distress and for all those who are experiencing direct effects from these massive fires!  This is sadly our “new normal” here and we are urged to always be on alert for the next one! On a daily basis, we send much gratitude to the firefighters statewide who are responding and putting their lives at risk to help others.

On a different subject, I am happy to have recently finished a group of three small blocks that I was suddenly inspired to create a few weeks back.   I just started with a color palette, as I often do, of scraps that I had.

That turned into a block I really loved, I’m calling it Convergence.  I had enough scraps left so decided to create another.  I much prefer odd numbers, so realized I needed one more to feel complete about it.

fullsizeoutput_48bb

So I turned over every scrap box searching for just the right off white linen scrap that I needed!!

I was lucky enough to scavenge just the littlest bits and make them work to my satisfaction!

IMG_5466

The strip with text comes from a vintage feed sack I found at a quilt show many years ago!  Not sure what is next for these three but for now I am satisfied to have them greet me on my design wall each time I go to work……they’ll tell me what they need eventually!

Scrappy Love

Posted on September 10, 2018

fullsizeoutput_4895

As some of you may already know, I’m a big fan of using as many of my scraps as possible…..you too right?

fullsizeoutput_4897

If you’re anything like me you just love fabric so much that the thought of tossing away even the smallest little bit of your beloved designer print, special linen blend or vintage cotton is just too much to bear (couldn’t help that extra bit of over dramatic emphasis).

frvMP%CVTBKyBS9EinLnxw

I recently had a vision of a soft yet modern color palette and found a ton of scraps to fit the color scheme I had in mind.  I created a series of four improv log cabins (getting back to my roots) where I included some of my own naturally dyed fabrics along with my much loved scraps.

F+cyEB4IQpi5s5Zzp%qR%w

After creating a wall hanging/baby quilt with all these scraps, I just didn’t feel the project was complete and I still had plenty of these scraps left over so decided a matching pillow cover was in order.

fullsizeoutput_488e

Not sure what step I enjoy more, the piecing or the the quilting!

fullsizeoutput_488f

I had so much fun with this project.  I had forgotten how satisfying creating pillow covers could be.  Once I remembered how to create the envelope back closure, I was hooked!

fullsizeoutput_4896

As I still had yet another small pile of matching scraps and plenty of linen (of course) I figured, why not make two pillows?!  I’m so excited about these pillow covers! This scrappy project was creatively liberating, not to mention,  just plain fun, AND I was able to utilize a sizable pile of scraps.

As soon as I finish quilting the matching wall hanging/baby quilt, I will have all of them listed in my Etsy shop!

A Finished Quilt

Posted on September 4, 2018

Hi and happy Tuesday!  I hope you enjoyed a nice long weekend.  Just wanted to share my recent finish with you all.

fullsizeoutput_485b

In my opinion, it’s always a big deal to finish a quilt.  Right? If you really consider how many hours, how much energy and love for the craft that goes in to each quilt……it’s pretty amazing.

fullsizeoutput_4859

This particular quilt was a love of mine many years back when we lived in our old house and I was a consistent sewer,  my kiddos were young and on a limited school schedule with no extra curricular activities.  Life just had a slower, slightly sweeter pace. Long days at home picking fruit, making lemonade, playing in the yard, making fairy villages, NAPS, and for me, lots of sewing and quilting, etc.

fullsizeoutput_485d

This was the last piece I finished just before we moved out of that home into our little “cottage” and I had to pack things up not really knowing when our how I would quilt again. That was a hard time.  Well, I never forgot about this little quilt, with it’s mixture of modern and charming that I am continually drawn to, this little quilt that was all but complete except for the binding!

fullsizeoutput_4853

We were fortunate enough to build a studio space for me to begin working again and I was recently able to finish the binding.   After four and a half years, I was surprised to realize that it’s a bit like riding a bike…….it all comes back!

fullsizeoutput_484e

This little quilt is officially complete and has had it’s first wash and tumble dry to give it that extra bit of quilty charm, and it it now (sold) listed in my Etsy Shop.  fullsizeoutput_485f

Thanks for stopping in to my blog today. Have a great week!
