    And Andrea Arnold wasn't very much of a risk; by the time she was programmed at Cannes she was already an Oscar winner for Best Live Action short film (for the very excellent short film 'Wasp').

    I honestly do my best to try to research women from around the world but because of where I live I only have limited access to films directed by women from those areas. I always welcome viewing suggestions though!

    This is why it's been very disappointing me to see that Cannes still refuses to program more than 4 women In Competition at a time. Also can't remember the last time they took a risk and programmed a debut film by a woman In Competition (Andrea Arnold in 2006 maybe?).

    Also Varda didn't just happen to become Varda randomly. Cannes programmed her from the very beginning. Lina Wertmüller, the first woman to be nominated for Best Director at the Oscars, was also regularly programmed In Competition at Cannes.

    This BTW is the reason I'm so bullish about women directed films getting into competition at major festivals. People DO care about the major festivals and what gets programmed, they seek out these films and they become part of film canon.

    For a long time the only way I could find "old" films directed by women was going to wiki pages for major festivals and clicking randomly on all the films hoping to find 1 or 2 directed by women. Lots of research. Lots of trial and error.

    Earlier this year 'On Body and Soul' won the Golden Bear (highest award) at making Enyedi only the 5th woman director (but the 2nd from Hungary!) to take the prize! 🇭🇺

    If another person says to me quality over quantity I am going to hit someone. Like all those films directed by men on the top 100 list are films of quality. PLEASE. Quality is such a loaded, gendered and racist term. They never talk about white men making films of quality.

    Only 4 black directors have ever been nomed for Best Director at the Oscars - all men. Only 4 women have ever nomed for Best Director at the Oscars - all white. Dee Rees deserves to be in the conversation. Her talent is there, it's bias holding her back.

    But if Mudbound can make it in BP, Supporting Actress and possibly cinematography it breaks my heart that it can't break into at least a few more tech categories, particularly score AND ESPECIALLY DIRECTOR.

    are acting awards only but they indicate who has buzz and who is building momentum + there is some crossover between SAG voters and Oscar voters. With all the ensemble awards Mudbound is picking up I'm feeling more confident it can get a Best Picture Oscar nom.
